Jennifer Ever (Michael Taylor Alexander)
Home-produced derivative of an early Smashing Pumpkins promotional demo. Crafted quite differently from Corgan's early guitar sound. Emulated vintage 80's synths were used for a retro-pop if not disco feel. Vocal layers mic'd in a bathroom shower.

It's great to hear a version of this song that has has got a more professional quality. I think it shows that the music can appeal to a wide array of genres.

People, Listen to this with headphones. The intro sounds good with them.
Also, everyone needs to listen with quality audio for all these songs. Laptop speakers and ear buds do no one justice.0 Like -

Thanks for listening... For those curious: here's another Pumpkins cover (Eye) that I did years ago: http://x.co/hUB7
You can here some original material here: http://soundcloud.com/pigagenda
(I will try to upload more of my original material... I am currently in a hardware transition, so bear with me...)0 Like -

Well, I was pretty direct with my critiquing of a lot of these covers... so it's only fair that I do the same for my own entry... I really think more time should have been spent on the dynamics/EQ of the drum tracks... It's kinda hard to explain, but the percussion dynamics I was gunning for were not met, and likely could have been achieved by simply working longer with those particular pieces of audio... That said, my goal when I set out was to translate 'Jennifer Ever' into this completely different "sound" I had floating around in my head... and the key to reaching the goal of that "sound" had more to do with overall expression rather than trivial accomplishments in production... So overall, I feel like I succeeded in doing what I hoped to achieve with my cover... warts and all...

Well, regarding my "win"... I think this stands as final proof that Billy Corgan has indeed lost his mind... j/k... Billy will always stand to be the greatest influence on the music I have created and hope to create... the segment, at least, that could fairly be called "music"...
My wife Jennifer (yeah, that's really her name...) was extremely proud of this honor... I did this cover during a hurried recording stint back in 2008 amid which I recorded an original album called 'Irrational Geographic' under the moniker 'Zygote Battery'... and, of course, I was thinking of Jennifer when I chose to do this cover song [:::insert cheesiness here:::], which ended up as an 'outtake' from those 2008 recording sessions...
When I first read about this contest on this site, I decided not to enter my song (thinking it wasn't up to snuff)... however, a former and future band-mate of mine: Jeremiah David Brennan... well, he encouraged me to go ahead and enter my song... and so I did... (thanks, Jere)...
To all the contestants: I'm still listening to your songs... it's only now that I've stopped listening to them comparatively and started listening to them because I simply love them...
Otherwise and Always, Love Prevailing,

I'm pumped you won this honor. This was my favorite cover out of all of them. I actually grooved to it and it was stuck in my head for the rest of the day. All in all Kudos!

PermalinkI hate to evoke this analogy... but I remember Beck once saying that whenever he performed 'Loser" he felt like he was doing a cover-song... cos he'd recorded the song in a rash, hurried freak-out... and he'd never intended it to become an anthem... or at least never dream it would become one....
Well, far be it removed from me to say I created an anthem... I won't kid anyone here... but I just wanted to use the Beck analogy to make people understand that I have spent years recording absolute rubbish... and then one fateful night, I happened to press 'record' and out came a monster from the sea.... a very timid, restrained, and diminutive monster, albeit... But, here was my cover of Jennifer Ever: an absolute accident... and if three fans had bobbed their heads to this, I would've been stunned... but, in my own little world... after all the anti-climatic hoopla of this contest, I think of Billy issuing that due-for-a-shave smile that he did in the 1979 video... him doing that smile when he heard my song.... that rare "I think we're okay if not proud" smile he accidently lets shine at times compromised... and, at that, I go back to listening to my own secret recorded rubbish... and bob my head anew....0 Like -
Now if I had only actually received the advertised prizes for winning this portion of the contest... that would have capped it all... :::still waiting:::

The prize for the category you won was the reissue of Pisces Iscariot which has yet to be released, Michael.

Oh, I thought I was getting a special advance... (someone mentioned I might be getting it from the band... which under those conditions was I was led to understand thusly...) In any event...

Yeah... I realize that....... Good thing the real privilege was having Corgan listen to my song, rather than the prolonged (mirage) reception of a Pumpkins keepsake like that reissue.....
