I get what you mean, especially with the chord progression used. I think the sadness comes from that unknowing and longing.
Bitter-sweet Id say.

yeah, bitter sweet. its kind of like someone who loves someone, but is maybe dead inside or feeling really down and is looking for some understanding or some hope in someone else.

i use to think it was a happyish, sweet song and i still do, but when i really started listening to the lyrics i just noticed that it had a thread of sadness there too.

Ooh, two others that I always loved, but had a definitively sad tinge to them for me, are Stellar and Cherry. The latter being moreso...

I don't know if many others would consider it so sad, but it's just the way Billy sings it.

I agree.

Also, Hope hasn't been mentioned yet.

Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness or Infinite Sadness are the most sad songs for me, i near tear up whenever I hear them. :billyangry

As for Soma being sad...I really don't see it as sad but rather a mystic, dreamlike song. There is no regretful, angsty tone to it, it is just arcane and cold.

Not that Soma is theeee saddest song, but I can definitely see how these few lines could be tear jerkers:

"So now I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools

One last kiss for me...yeah
One last kiss good night"

I can't fathom how anyone could consider these two songs to not be sad. There really can't be any arguement about Rotten Apples with a line like "we're wired into sadness"

As for Soma, I can take that it has no angsty tone, but how can you not feel that tone of utter regret and self pity? It's FAR more than a space-song. Songs like Starla are far more suited to that description.

By Starlight is an amazing song, as someone mentioned before, the chords, and the atmosphere, really work well. To me it's always been about finally finding that one person who not only completes but understands you, who has been through the same pain you have felt all your life. So besides the feeling of finality of finding that perfect lover, there's also the identification with each other's deep sadness, which you have been alone in all your life before. So it's like a release, but one that overwhelms because it has been hidden inside you for so long..

yeah..;)

Landslide is another nice sad song. But Billy has to be the one singing it though;)

So... that's sad?

I'd have thought there would be a big feeling of relief and happiness out of all that.

This is all backwards.

By Starlight. Sounds like a song about a very content person to me.

Another song that I find sad is Czarina.
Some say it was written about Yelena, but I think it's more of a ''moving on'' song.
Its about Billy needing to move on from the troubles that followed him after Mellon Collie, I might be alone on this one but I think its quite sad!

Well haven't you ever heard of happy tears?:roll

It's like this--someone has a bunch of pent-up sadness that they could never express to anyone. they've been suffering in silence all their life so to speak. then when they become truly happy again, and they're finally able to release their emotions, they'll probably have an outpouring of sadness for all they've been through. emotional catharsis!

come on, haven't you ever felt so uncharacteristically happy that it made you cry? well, me neither, or it's been to long to remember...:sigh

depends on what you get out of the song, I guess. content, yeah, I can see that, but the melancholy vibe is still unmistakable. *groan* uhh, I did not mean that as a play on words:roll

Well, I would have to say that I've found By Starlight to be sad in its own light. For me it doesn't lean one way or the other though. It's happy with a melancholic twist.

Czarina is very obviously about Yelena. She is Russian and it is when he dated her. I think the song is sad sounding, but as far as lyrics, I guess in a certain light they're sad. But I keep to what I said, Jersey Shore is the saddest song ever, I practically cry every time! It reminds me, again like I said of my dog.

Czarina is so under-rated! And you would certainly have my blessing if you called your daughter Czarina!
