It took me years to really like Machina. I think it's because of how it was marketed. At the time it was described as a return to the style of MCIS, but it isn't at all - it's heavier than Adore, yeah, but still not a very rocking album. And then the lead single and first song on the album is Everlasting Gaze, one of the only songs that does sound vaguely close to something off MCIS.

So whenever I listened to it, I was in the mood for a grungey rock album, so it never really satisfied me. Once I finally accepted that it's actually more of an atmospheric album, a bit like The Cure's Disintegration, I came to appreciate it a lot more - especially listening to Machina and Machina II consecutively. I can't wait for the re-release, with the correct track order and re-mastered songs, then hopefully it will be even better :)

true. everlasting gaze potrays the wrong image for the album. its like pyro. i mean, there are some tracks on Machina/II that i really love, but as an album, its still taking some growing. slowly slowly

I fell in love with Machina at first listen. The lyrics really grabbed to me. I think Machina has some of my favorite SP lyrics. Machina II had the same effect, I fell in love with it right away.

What I find disturbing is Musicman puts Machina on the same tier as Teargarden... :o

Original Machina I've struggled with, I don't like the production at all. I'm not saying that Teargarden is comparable to the original Machina though. The difference in my opinion between Machina and Teargarden is the difference between a B and a C on your report card. They just fall in that order. Machina II on the other hand, parts of it are the worse the Pumpkins have ever offered, and there are some diamonds in the rough on the album, but it so unbalanced and hard to listen to due to lack of a proper release, that I have a hard time liking it. I could at least hear Teargarden for everything it had to offer, maybe I'll be swayed a different way with the rereleases, maybe not. But Soul Power sung by Billy Corgan is one of the most painful things I've ever heard in my life, everything on Teargarden destroys it.

I think that SD, Mellon Collie, Adore and Machina were all WOOOW albums because each one of them sounded completely different whilst being 10/10. Teargarden and Zeitgeist are different but not different enough.

I think I'd have to agree with KJ that not including Teargarden, Gish is the weakest SP album. Not that it's bad, but the others, in my opinion, are better.

Thank you Epitome. :D

Gish is great, don't get me wrong, but I like everything else better.

If it makes you feel any better, Zeitgeist is barely better than Gish. In fact, on some days of the week, I like Gish more. ;)

Ha, Zeitgeist doesn't even touch Gish.

When you think about it, Gish doesn't sound that much like SD at all. Much rawer and more psychedelic, with more mellow moments.

The whole "If you have to go, don't say goodbye" segment from For Martha tops all other SP lyrics for me.

Incredibly heartfelt lyrics on Adore. :)
