I don't see how anyone can not consider A Song For A Son a Pumpkin classic! I think it is, so it must be!

It certainly doesn't sound like anything he's ever done before. Which is the only neutral thing I have to say about it. The style isn't really my cup of tea. I prefer darker less happy clappy Pumpkins tunes. But it sounds to me the direction of this concept album is the exact opposite of that.

I have enjoyed some of the songs played in that Backwards Clock Society show, however I can never get into these Spirits in the Sky ones.

My opinion so far.. there's going to be 44 songs.. there's gotta be some in there that I like lol Billy can change styles a lot.

i agree with ghostchild on WWMM (not shocking i'm sure) and yeah, i want to see what Jimmy will be doing next. i really loved what he did with JCC.

as for Song For A Son, i like that tons better than WWMM. when i heard SFAS it gave me a bit of hope for the project, but then WWMM totally killed it. my only problem really with SFAS is that live versions had more emotion than the studio version vocal wise. and that's why i wouldn't give it the honor of the title of a Pumpkin classic. if it had more emotion in the vocals maybe, but like his other more recent endeavors it doesn't. it falls a bit flat in that department. i do like the instrumentals a lot though and i would take an album of that over WWMM any day. i just wish it had more passion and emotion behind it.

I've decided it isn't as bad as I first thought....still not great though. I listened to it again over the weekend and it didn't make me want to immediately change it. I find it more appealing than Song for a Son (which I've never liked, btw). SFAS has terrible lyrics, poor singing, poor production, waayyy too long...it just sounds cheap and uninteresting. The solo is the only glimmer of hope it has, which really isn't that great either.

As for the poppyness, I mean you really can't expect EVERY song to be sad, depressing, and dreary. Come on that's just not realistic. One thing I've always said about the Pumpkins is that their songs span the spectrum of every emotion (including happy) and the dynamics too. We've got everything from extremely heavy to extremely soft. The mark of a good band/singer is able to cover that entire ground.

I like a wide range of music, and I'm happy with the first two songs, but I do hope there's a decent amount of heavier/faster stuff to come.

Latest news there is that Jimmy is featured on a couple of songs on Gannin Arnold's new album that is out now, and that Cinder still kicks ass.....

It's a nice POP-rock song but it's not what I expect from SP. But it also true that we are ready to listen many different kinds of music, as SP fans.

It's an ok song I thought. Gets better after a few listens. I didn't really like Thirty-Three at first, or We Only Come Out at Night, or Beautiful, but now I love them.

A Song For A Son however.. well I think that song is awesome. One of the better songs in a while. That song has me excited. We have a lot of songs coming, and the one thing the Pumpkins have is a variety of different kinds of songs, and it's always been that way. Just like they have a variety of many different fans. You won't like every song. But I can almost guarantee by the end of all this, we will all have a bunch that we like, and a few we love, and a few of us may have a new all time favorite.

As Smashing Pumpkins fans we've been spoiled. There's a ton of excellent music. Sit back and enjoy what comes, because one Smashing Pumpkins song has never been an indication of what the next will be.

I was just thinking about this... What if the streaming quality is terrible so that it will entice people to download the songs! We all know how much MP3's are passed around these days. Seems like a little subliminal enticement there to me! Which, in this case, I would say is a good thing!

Yeah, probably the streaming is there really just as a sample, but the idea is to download it if you're interested. Course, it could come with the downside that some people stream it and then dismiss downloading it based on the low quality of the stream, which the assume to be the same quality as the download.
