I like how the email from SP telling me about Spangled was sent to my spam folder.

I was immediately disappointed when I heard the intro.

its alright i guess for a mini song, like a little mini interlude or something. its pretty short. he should have released another regular track with it.

I think it's completely amazing! So Beatlesque and late 1960's, and soooo gooooood. It makes me think of Les Enfants du Paradis!

While not a great song, Spangled is an essential Teargarden track. It's better than Stitch and rivals Freak, but they are two completely different songs.

Song For A Son is an epic
Astral Planes is inspired
Widow a little too ambitious
Stich a filler
Freak just an ordinary song

Spangled sounds like a song to be played as the first encore, with just keyboard, no drums or guitars, Billy singing even more emotionally than in the studio recording. Think Death From Above live.
It's a good lead in to a really good song like United States or Gossamer.

It's grown on me, I must admit, haha. I 'm starting to really like it.

I dont know what to say about this song. Some of it's pretty indeed - I didnt like the start with the cheesy harpishchord but it beats the hell out of widow make my mind (i think thats the best song to compare with). When the drums kicked in, the song was great

I'd compare Spangled to something like Sweet Sweet. Short, mellow, acoustic.

But listen to Sweet Sweet - the vocals are full of emotion, the music if anything is even more basic, yet somehow more compelling.
I won't go as far as saying Spangled is a bad track, I don't mind it, but it's yet another track that feels flat and emotionless.

When I listen to old SP stuff I really feel like Billy was passionate about what he was singing about. Now either his heart isn't in it, or his voice simply doesn't portray it anymore.

I've been saying all along this is the downfall of this release method. I would not at all be surprised if this song makes perfect sense when sandwiched in between two other (completely different) songs. By itself, it's an epic piece of shit.

People are comparing it to Sweet, Sweet. Imagine what you would have thought of that song if it had been released by itself with none of the other songs to accompany it. I'd guess most of us would be less than impressed with it. But within the context of the album, it's a vital piece of the puzzle.

He needs to release albums as albums again. To hell with this one song at a time bullshit.

I have to agree with alot of people here, on it's on Spangled is pretty mediocre but I listened to it earlier straight after Freak and it makes for a pretty good come down, the song felt good following directly on from Freak

I think I would've liked Sweet Sweet a lot more than Spangled even if it was released by itself. Of course, I'm glad that it wasn't anyway as it's a terrible system. If he released something as heartfelt as Sweet Sweet now (and with great vocals that convey emotion) I'd be delighted.

Having said that, I do agree that releasing each song one at a time does make everyone scrutinise each song more - but Billy said doing it like this made each song the best it could be, so he's doing himself no favours really.

The songs ain't gettin' no scrutiny from me, I just listen to each one a few times after they're released then never listen to them again. cuz dey suck!

I really, really like Teargarden by Kaleidyscope so far. Although I do agree that "Spangled" is not a satisfying song when listened to by itself. The whole album is so much better if you listen to the songs one after another. I honestly feel that when we have at least eleven songs to listen to back-to-back, you will all enjoy it a whole lot more. At least I know I will. I'm just aggravated at how long we have to wait for each song to be released. I'm hoping that Billy will change the release method sometime in the near future.

i havent even received it yet, though i think thats because it was sent to my other phased out email account.

i do agree that spangled by itself is kind of meh, but in sequence with the others, it fits and seems like it has a place.
