I love the way the song opens...but not so much the rest of it.

It's kinda humdrum by the way that there just like two main riffs on it, but a very cool riff. :D

When I popped in Disc 2 of MCIS for the first time, I expected a bunch of mellow tunes like Take Me Down. Instead, I got this vicious, ferocious, sneering menace of a song. Though the ending cuts off -.- 9.3

This song is like having a snowball thrown in your face while you're curled up under a blanket next to a fire. Take Me Down brings you down and mellow, then the opening riff and lines like "King of the horseflies" totally catch you off-guard...in a good way. When I blast this song in my car, the opening riff makes me feel like a badass. 9.

Am I the only one who forces himself to sit thru the whole thing most of the time listening to MCIS?
If I haven't got the time, it's just Disc 2....sorry for my sermon but I have never before seen that tune as a sort of opener...interesting point of view though :overjoyed

Yeah, I only put MCIS on when I have 2 hours to spare, listen to the whole thing. Same with Machina I & II as well, since I've grown to fully appreciate it.

Wow. Way cool, epitome. Full Respect.
I've become a sampler these days, barely putting on an album and just listening to selected songs. I've never sat through Mellon Collie disks back to back, never. I guess I'm missing out.. But then I listen to a lot of concerts like GM PLACE 97 which sort of captures the album in it's true, raw form.

I'm going away for a few days people.. and unless he objects.. Rivers will be assuming command of this thread..

In my photo classes we talk about presenting our work, and the spaces between each photo can represent visual pauses as opposed to putting each photo next to each other. There's a pause between the two discs, whether they intended it or not. There are exceptions with mp3 players and vinyl... but there's that short breath of release when you switch the discs. And when disc two starts back up, it sucks you right back in to the album. It's not really the "opener" but it is a new beginning within the album.

Yeah I would have to agree. It's like Dawn to Dusk is part 1 of the journey and Twilight to Starlight is part 2 of the journey. I used to jump around a lot with music, still do. But generally I'm in a listening to album and shows all the way through mood, even if it takes a while lol.

When I first listened to Mellon Collie and was first getting into the band I only listened to handful of songs until I finally sat down and listened to the album all the way through and loved it. Although sometimes I would still jump around depending on my mood. Sometimes I would just skip "Tales of A Scorched Earth" as it's quite grating to me at times.

But anyways, I'm giving "Where Boys Fear To Tread" an 8.5 out of 10.

For me its a solid 9.
You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities...

Yeah, I agree. I mean, it is the opener to "Twilight to Starlight"--the second disc of the "double album," not "extra-long single album":roll

8.5 from me as well. And great transition to Bodies! :D

Re: RATE A SONG - WHERE BOYS FEAR TO TREAD 2 years 2 months ago #80402

The reviews for this song so far have been the most interesting to me.... I never thought of this as a particularly heavy or aggressive song because of the falsetto backing vocals, the way it cuts short, and the scope of it being not very epic compared to other songs on the same album.... so thank you to everyone for showing me a different to look at this... it's really changed how I hear it..... I also never played doom and didn't realize those were the doom sounds in this song... so anyway with all that said I would have rated it lower until I started reading the previous reviews that showed me a new way of looking at it.... 8.5.
