This song is perfect? It's really up to par with all the other perfect ratings you've given? Seriously?

I feel like you guys have been giving out perfect ratings with out realizing a 10 means it's perfect. It's perfect. It's the best of the best. And you think "Beautiful" is one of the greatest song so of all time?

I don't give 10s away easily, but then maybe some of us just Really Really Really Love a lot of different songs and they're all Perfect to that person. It is possible right...? Adore will probably have a few tens from me, that's for sure.

I could never really get into this song and to be honest it actually kind of bores me. I'm give it a 4.5.

I gave it a 10. Doesnt mean its perfect, doesnt mean its the best song of all time. But its special to me, brings out amazing memories, and has a special place in my heart. Its one of my favorite SP songs. Sometimes its not about the music for me, its about how the song makes you feel.

Actually, a 10 does mean it's perfect. A 10 is the highest it can go. Just because it makes you feel giddy, doesn't mean it's a perfect song.

I'd have to agree a 10 isn't perfect. It's just the highest rating. If we have ratings from 1 to 10 then each should equal to the same amount, so:
1 = 1-10%
2= 11-20%
...
10 = 91-100%

So 10 means it's a great song, but not necessarily perfect.

Not to mention there is no "perfect" song.

Sorry Epitome, I'm with Ryon on this one.

Realistically the songs should be rated from 0-10 not 1-10 (although given it's Smashing Pumpkins I think it's fair to automatically rule out the zero ;) ). I think if a song's 'almost perfect' you should give it a 9.5 - 9.9. So the songs I gave 10 I think are absolutely perfect. Murder will disagree with his highest mark being 9.5, believing the best song he's ever heard can still be better. Theoretically I agree that even the best songs can be better, I just haven't heard it, so therefore it doesn't exist. If a new band emerge with songs that are twice as good as the Pumpkins and put other classic masterpieces to shame (however unlikely) I would simply adjust my previous ratings to account for the new material that is 'blissfully in the heavens' as they may say.

Re: RATE A SONG - BEAUTIFUL 2 years 1 month ago #81836

Well, Murder's highest mark is 9.5 and he just gave 7.0 to this song which he says he "never really liked"...

I don't know what you would describe as the perfect song. I have quite a wide range of music that I enjoy... I love XYU, for example, I'd say it's a clear 10... but it's no good to me when I want to listen to something mellow or electronic. There is no song that could appeal to me for any particular "mood" I might be in.

So not only do I not agree that 10 should equal perfect, I'd also say that in music (and any other art) there's no such thing as perfect anyway :p
If we were doing something scientific then I'm sure there would be a state of perfection where a perfect score would be applicable. But music is art not science :)

[EDIT:]Oh, by the way, I've only been giving ratings a whole number. Rating a song very accurately seems a bit odd to me, like your enjoyment is exactly equal every time you listen to it, and can be quite precisely judged against all other songs, even though they could be a totally different genre and style. Again, being so accurate seems a bit too scientific for something that is much more magical.

Well obviously your experience of listening to music is quite different to mine (and not in the 'But everyone's music listening experience is different' kind of way :p ). Saying a song isn't perfect just because you don't feel like it seems odd. Like you wake up in the morning for your usual bowl of 10/10 coco pops, but a pizza isn't 10/10 perfect food because it's breakfast and you don't feel like it.
I'm not measuring anything scientific when rating a song, just how much I like / appreciate it. That doesn't really fluctuate after you've heard it enough times.

And Murder might not like Beautiful much, but he can still recognize that it's good enough to warrant a 7. It's Smashing Pumpkins for Chrissake

Re: RATE A SONG - BEAUTIFUL 2 years 1 month ago #81839

Well, earlier people were saying these ratings should just be compared within SP's catalogue, rather than just as a song in general. I haven't been doing it that way though and I guess Murder isn't either.

Well, I'm not quite sure I would say food is art but it does share a similar subjective quality, so I'll stick with that analogy ;) I don't think a pizza could be directly compared to, say, a burger or a salad or Mars Bar. They're all different. Now, on any particular occasion, I might REALLY want one of those, and it'd be a 10/10 meal. But not always.

But then your original point would've been that I can't give my pizza a 10/10, because for all I know there could be another topping that could be added which would make it better. So, say one day I added some chilli to the tomato sauce to spice it up and I thought, "hey, that's actually even better than it was before!" But the next day when I was preparing my breakfast pizza, I really wasn't in the mood for something spicy. So I would say they ARE different depending on the occasion/mood.

Course, music isn't food either. And I guess our experience of listening to music is different. Music is my deepest love, I would say. I know most people just enjoy listening to music as a way to pass the time, which is fine. I LOVE listening to music. I love hearing new music. I love talking about music with like-minded people.

Anyway, this is all just my opinion. The way I see music (well, hear it, I suppose). To me, it's the art-form above all others. I can't give a precise score to a song. I can't say Tonight Tonight is 9.3. Generally, I'd just say it's an amazing song. One of hundreds of songs that I think are really just mind blowing. So, for me, they deserve a 10/10. For all I know, if Billy played a trumpet at the end it might sound even better. But he doesn't.

My original point is that you CAN give your pizza 10/10, regardless whether or not you feel like eating it. Billy plays a trumpet, or we find a new sauce, then we alter original rating to make way for new rating. Now my pizza is a 9.9 out of ten ;)
I think you can compare pizza with burgers .. and even a Mars bar if you really want to (although the Pizza will always win by default - it's like comparing Smashing Pumpkins (the band) with Blink 182).

Hm. All this talk about food is making me hungry.................

Re: RATE A SONG - BEAUTIFUL 2 years 1 month ago #81842

Well, we agree that we should give our favourite songs 10/10 then. I don't think a song can be considered "perfect" though.

See, I don't think you can *really* compare SP with Blink 182. The music is totally different. Of course, anything *can* be compared. I could compare SP to a wombat. Sure, I like wombats, but most of the time I'd rather listen to SP than look at a wombat.

Anyway, shall we leave this to get back to ratings for Beautiful now? :p

you see, even this discussion shows that music ratings are above all else, subjective, and based on individual criteria for rating systems

any statistical measurement is going to have some error involved, whether due to individual variability or inaccurate measurement and so on...slapping a single number to conceptualize the appraisal of a complex work of art is bound to have some problems. So we just do the best we can and keep in mind the variability in our measurements

Although it's true that people who dole out 10s for every little song they think is cool are cheap-ass 10-cent whores who'll give it away to anyone
save it for special occasions, you sluts :p

Let me paint you a picture:

Let's say someone rates both Beautiful a 10 and Thru The Eyes of Ruby a 10, but likes Thru The Eyes of Ruby better. Therefore, Beautiful should not have been given the 10 in the first place because it is not as good as Thru The Eyes of Ruby. Do you get my point?

Re: RATE A SONG - BEAUTIFUL 2 years 1 month ago #81852

I've given several 10s to songs on MCIS, but that's because they're among my favourites (not just by SP but by any band). I only gave one 10 on Pisces and would only have given a few on Siamese Dream if I'd been rating songs on that album. And none on Gish.

So it might seem like I'm giving out 10s too easily, but really I'm not. There's a reason MCIS is my favourite album ;)

Yes, but, it could also depend on why you like each song. There might be different factors on why the 10 was given, even if one is not as good as one.

Plus, if you went through every song like that, rating out of 10 to 1 decimal place (so basically a %) then you could only rate 100 songs, plus some that were totally equal.
