Another thought:

Let's realize that he is talking about some things in the "immediate" future (6 months or less) but also some things in the more distant future (2 years or more).....Billy doesn't exactly have a great track record with keeping to his promises. If he says the Machina remaster will come in 2013, I assume that I **might** see it by the time I'm 60....but more than likely won't see it at all.

I agree, but I think with EMI's involvement, it will push the project a little more. Because in the end EMI wants to make money, and with the dire state the music industry is in, they will jump on the opportunity to put something out that already has an established fan base. It’s a guaranteed money maker for them. I think this is why we’ve been seeing so many other albums get re-releases.

If anything I think the new album/recording process will get delayed. And of course, it may take longer to get some archive material out.

So what's with the name change? Do we all have to start calling him Willy?

But ah, I get this feeling that all is right with the world... :) At the very least now we have something to look forward to besides the single-at-a-time/disappointment/repeat Teargarden torment. I don't take his proposed time frame at face value, but it's still better than being prisoner to 5 more years of Teargarden....

I know record labels aren't making as much money as they used to be, but I'm pretty sure they're still making a reasonable profit. Not that I'm doubting if any of them get an opportunity of "money for nothing" they won't take it, they'd be stupid not to.

I don't think they're making much. EMI declared bankruptcy in February, and I believe someone ended up buying them.

But with the advance of science , it is very feasible for us all to like to well over 150 with active years left in us so ,that gives billy a good time scale to work too.

Even so, it would be foolish to attribute that to all record companies. Companies, even big ones, go bankrupt all the time. I know there is a significant amount of piracy in the form of illegally downloaded MP3s, but I'm sure there are still more than enough MP3s and physical releases being sold to keep most companies afloat. And any financial problems are more likely due to ridiculous over-paying of some executives than lack of sales. I mean, if independent labels are still going, then the big labels only have their own poor management and greed to blame for any problems they get into.

Seems unlikely. And strangely depressing.

It's funny how no matter what happens, Billy always knows how to reel me back in and get me excited. We finally get Owata, then we get an actual album (with a cool name), and then I get the chance to buy MCIS on vinyl, and then (dare I say it) the possibility of seeing the last show? Nice.

This is exciting news!

I do have a few concerns/comments.

I am happy to get new tracks, but don't want to buy all the albums over again. I think that they a re all perfect as is. I would not change a thing, and I have always felt that. I only album I want to see remastered is the big Z.

Billy's recent mixing history has not been too good. I would hate to see these albums butchered by bad remastering.

I might be the only person who thinks that most remasterd albums don't sound that good, at least from what have heard.

Will this put SP back on the map? I don't think so. There have been planety of bands who remaster all their albums and they don't end up back on top, even if they once were.

Also, the best news of all is Machina. I can't wait for it, but that 2013 date..don't hold your breath.

I am super excited to hear the news about Oceania. The heat is on for Billy to make a fantastic album! I'm going to be counting the days to September. Plus Owata coming out too! Everyone likes that song. I ca't wait to hear it in the studio version :D

Not too excited to hear about the remasters though. In my opinion Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces, Mellon Collie, and Aeroplane are mastered perfectly as they are. Those are the benchmark to what the new stuff should be mastered.... I would have been more excited to hear that Zeitgeist and American Gothic were going to get a proper work over. The Machina news is excellent too, the mixes on both albums were staggered and not very good.

All in all fantastic news :D :D :D :D :D Oceania 2011! Wooooooooooo

Disintegration by The Cure turned out really well, re-mastered - I actually heard things on the new version that I missed, or at least paid little attention to, on the original. Porcupine Tree have some good re-masters as well. Most, I find, make little difference, other than increasing the volume. I agree, given the recent output, that Billy re-mastering stuff now could actually be a bad thing. And like you said, they don't need it anyway. I'll probably buy them for the "unreleased" stuff anyway.

And yeah, I don't think this will put SP back on the map. I think the days of big bands are pretty much behind us now anyway, especially as far as rock bands go.

As long as they sound as good as the Pearl Jam/The Beatles remasters...

Bad bad bad. I don't want more clipped victims of the Loudness War, especially on some fantastic and historic albums.

But you know? Maybe Billy remastering his old works will enable him to see the nuances of the old work, and may start to influence him in how he presents the Oceania songs :D Pumpkins Guitar Overdub Army anyone? :D

UGH, can you imagine if he cranked up the vocals on those albums They are perfect where they are, he would RUIN them if he did. Now I am afraid D:

Also, who is going to go convert the Teargarden wikipedia page to Oceania? A fourth-completed, abandoned album ain't gonna look good on their record :D

I'll probably only ever listen to the new versions once or twice anyway. I have all the originals, and I doubt they'll be improved on.

First of all - remastering ANY old SP album is a bad idea for they will surley just all become part of the loudness war and lose their dynamcis (MCIS would be killed with a better production).
That said, I'm looking forewared for all the bonus tracks and will stay with the old releases in terms of albums only.
Yes, there finally will be a new album :) .
And the full MACHINA is also a great idea.

You guys are all so adamant about the remasters not possibly being any better than the current versions - how can you possibly know this? I don't care how perfect you think the records are, the fact is you don't know what they will sound like. Just have to wait and see! On top of that, if you don't want them, don't buy them.

Also, Machina II getting remixed and mastered will be cool, but I don't really care all that much about them coming out and in the right order and all that hooplah. I've listened to those songs on shuffle enough times that I've probably listened to them in something close to whatever the right order is supposed to be. I think Oceania is my favorite news out of all of this, followed by MCIS vinyl.

But it's all good news of course.

In my own defence, I will give the re-masters a try. I'm just saying I find it hard to believe MCIS or Adore could be improved. MCIS is the best sound on an album I own, and I own about 700. I'd be happy for the best to become even better, it just seems unlikely.

As for Machina... I'm an album kind of guy, not a shuffler. I've always wanted to know how Machina would sound as intended by the artist, not the record label. I currently listen to Machina followed by Machina II, as it's the closest I can get, but they don't sound right together at all, so the album being released propely is great news for me. I wouldn't listen to MCIS on shuffle either, I listen to it as it's meant to be... a 2 hour album.

Re: The Announcement 2 years 4 weeks ago #83453

I don't know what to say.... it's like someone thought up the exact thing I would like to see and made it happen.... the re-releases, the control the band has over the unreleased and live material -- the new album!!! New album!! Thank you to Billy, the band now, the band then, and my inner and outer universe...

And as for people arguing against remasters -- YOU'RE ARGUING AGAINST THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE FRIGGING ALBUMS -- wait, no, maybe you're right, I'm sure you know better than the musicians who wrote, recorded, mastered, have chosen to remaster, and toured and played these songs for years.

Awesome.
