Ferocious. I like the bitter vocals that often seem 'uttered' rather than 'sung'.
A brutally honest endeavor into chaos.

Start with an easy 10. Subtract 2 for the lifeless vocals and 1 for the worst production of any song, ever.

Re: RATE A SONG - DOOMSDAY CLOCK 1 year 9 months ago #92017

It does have poor production (not the worst ever though). The vocals are lifeless, but given the lyrics of the song, they work well here (unlike the similarly stale vocals on Song For A Son).
With different production and more passionate vocals, this could easily have fit on MCIS. And to be honest, the song is so good I'm happy to overlook any slight flaws. One of my favourite SP 2 songs and a great way to kick start the band back into life.

I know, it's a bit depressing that people don't like Zeitgeist. I mean, yeah, the production is pretty poor, and yeah, Billy's vocals aren't what they used to be... but it's a series of great alt. rock songs (with a couple of exceptions ;)). Course, I don't like some songs other people love, we have some wildly differing opinions on here.

Now, how can we hide these Zeitgeist song threads from Don? ;)

I think Zeitgeist is a great album, and totally not what I was expecting. Some of my Pumpkin-fan friends got it, others not so much. I don't have a problem with the production actually, but then I'm not a musical expert. Zeitgeist has such a dark raw feel to it, and as much as the haters will hate, you cannot deny it's fearlessness. A major improvement on the last BC endeavor (Future Embrace) which lacked everything this album has.

I don't think we can hide it from Don though..
Him and others have been looking forward to this moment ;)

I know and it's kind of annoying to me, because just a few really low scores are going to totally drag these songs down :(

Zeitgeist starts off dark and aggressive, but the second half of the album (though still having some dark moments) is much mellower and at times more uplifiting. But that works quite well in the flow of the album, I think. The first time I listened to it though, I did feel like BC was almost tricking us with some classic MCIS-style songs at the start... but maybe that works well too... starting off almost as an homage to SP 1 and gradually moving away as the album goes on, into SP 2. I'm probably reading too much into that actually :)

As for the production - this is what me and my friends in the 90s would've called "over-produced"... you can tell there is energy and aggression in the songs, but the production is so slick a lot of that gets lost. But like I said, I'm willing to overlook that, especially as a lot of albums in the last 10 years have the same problem to some extent.

The right production & better vocals & lyrics would have made this a 7.
The songwriting is not the worst at all, though there are too many drop-d fifths (Rammstein sound ;) ).
But it sounds horrible this way. Lifeless and stiff. And I can't help but feel that Billy tried to let it sound harder than it should.

The Smashing Pumpkins "Doomsday Clock," is the "Fuck You (An Ode To No One)" of Zeitgeist, and it's one of the few tracks that the production works for instead of against. The Smashing Pumpkins "Doomsday Clock," is a great song the music, the drumming, and the vocals are great, it's also a great live song too. I really hope The Smashing Pumpkins include "Doomsday Clock" in there setlist the next time they tour. I rat the The Smashing Pumpkins "Doomsday Clock" a 10 / 10.

Earphoria ,Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, The Airplane Flies High, Adore, and The 20th Anniversary Tour CDs and MP3s are the only albums and completions that have good production. Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot, Machina / The Machines Of God, MachinaII / The Friends And Enemies Of Modern Music, Zeitgeist, and American Gothic all have flawed production. Almost every song from The Smashing Pumpkins sounds five times better live. Yeah, I said it, The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream has crapy production, wanna make something of it :upset

I think its a great song. I'd heard nothing but bad about Zeitgeist. And then i put it on and I loved how this track started. This might be a bit of an over rated score, but I dont want this track to be dragged down. I'd say....... 9.5

Rolling Stone gave Zeitgeist 4 stars. It's really not a bad album. It was my first SP album, and a good starting point because I had no expectations.
