I'm suprised by the high scors on this one. This was the 1st Teargarden song I heard and I was like "what the FUCK is that synth!" It sounds like a bad 80's pop song. Chorus saves it from being a 1. so i'll give this a 2

Not as unlistenable as WWMM or ASIT, but still too pop. 6.

It sounds like it was recorded for Muse's Black Holes and Revelations album. But I like that album, so I guess that's quite a good thing really.

Synth damages it, and so do the corny lyrics. Still great, though. 8.5.

I've got no qualms. Even if a TG song is decent, the other songs bring it down by association. It's like if all your friends are fools with propellor caps.

For once, a song that's catchy and interesting, instead of catchy and annoying. The lack of consistency with other songs doesn't bode well for the supposed "album", but anything would be better than the stuff we got in the first EP. Thank you Vampire Diarrhea!

Also loved this one from the get go. I never had the "Muse" reaction because I don't listen to them, ha.

I'm giving this one a 9.
It is probably my favorite song off of Teargarden.

Ugh. I fucking hate this song. Even more cringe-worthy than the synth is when Billy sings "what is love?" I would rather listen to this:

I hate to give a deserving Teargarden song a 7, but hey this is where I'm being honest, and this one is alright. The chorus nearly kills me every time I hear it, I just don't like it. Sure the first E.P. got the pass on nostalgia but the second won't get that luck. Anyway like I said a 7.

Re: RATE A SONG - THE FELLOWSHIP 1 year 6 months ago #101504

I love this one. 8/10.

I feel like he tried time & time again to craft an anthemic song and it did not work well at all. G.L.O.W., FOL, etc. Just so bad. With The Fellowship, I think he hit the nail on the head. It has more substance to it than say, Astral Planes, but just enough to not go past the point of being an "anthem." The lyrics are indeed repetitive, but I do quite enjoy these portions. Typical inquisitively obscure Billy Corgan lyrics.

"Soon we'll fly,
But on this eve we ride
A steel horse tied to dirt
No words, no words, no words
No words will suffice,
Against the sacrifice
For what is love, if not cause?"

I broke down all of the Teargarden songs lyrically on the O-Board (even though I despise most of them) a while back. Don't feel like doing it again, but this verse especially has a certain relevance, although the song as a whole does.

Lyrics aside, it is crafted very well, synths or not. Nothing feels out of place, and this is the only TbK song thus far where I feel that the synths actually suit the song. Love the galloping beat of the song, the powerfully-delivered chorus and the background noises.

I will say that this is perhaps the one song where Billy stretched his 2007-2011 singing style as far as it could go. Pushed it to the limits here, in my eyes. Thank God he seems to be singing in his old vocal style once more for Oceania & the tours.

More people liked this than I thought.
You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities...
