It's a good cover, I'll give it a 7 / 10, I think Autumn Nocturne, Jenifer Ever, There It Goes, or Spiteface should have taken this song's place.

Wow, really guys? This is getting ratings in the 7 - 10 range? You consider this as good as 70% of the SP catalog? I don't. I think it's pretty awful honestly.

It gets a 1.1 from me.

You'll have to explain how rating a song a 7 out of ten means it's in the top 70 percent. Cause that would mean, 8 out ten means 80 percent, and 10 out of ten means 100 percent, which makes no sense at all.

Even on the reverse, I think I'm allowed to give a perfect score to more than 10 percent of SP's songs, hell any damn percentage I feel like.

I don't hate this song, but I don't love it either, 5 / 10.

So, what's next? James Iha : Let It Come Down, Smashing Pumpkins : Demos, Zwan : Marry Star Of The Sea, Jimmy Chamberlain Complex : Life Begins Again, Billy Corgan : The Future Embrace?

5.5

I like it. It's a cute, romantic little ditty. But it's not Starla or anything.

Not speaking in mathematical exactities here, man. Just saying. Quiet was rated 79.95. Quiet. Think about the prospect of my blue heaven being considered better than Quiet. That's pure absurdity no matter how you dissect it.

This is right. But this compares to much songs, maybe because many are so different to realy compare.
For example: I give "Medellia of ..." 10 points in a complet other way than I would have given "Bullet...".
It´s not the same but it´s always smashing pumpkins and I think that´s why I love them.

Too bad about the hate for My Blue Heaven though. You just got to imagine you're in a rustic wooden house, singing to your baby in the crib, with your wife Molly in her 19th century dress and a player piano in the background... :D

Oh, and here's a statistics lesson from George Carlin:

OK, so the inner Piano player (However little I may know though) and love of this sort of thing, just well...makes me love this. It's so different from anything else the Pumpkins recorded that it becomes really interesting and I love that it's mainly just the piano and Billy, so I think I'll give it (Sorry Ghostchild) an 8/10. There's just such a charm to it that I find in the song.

Actually Ghostchild I don't consider this better then Quiet, far from it, Quiet is a 10/10 song for me because of the awesome solo, but everyone is different and these percentages are based on the average of everyone, so it's possible many people have different opinions. We're also all rather large fans of the band so we tend to enjoy a good amount of the content, regardless of however it may be done or compared to other content. So a lot of us, as unfortunate as it may be, are going to rate song relatively high the majority of the time. For this one, like I said, it's got a charm to it that just draws me in and makes me love it, but in comparison to the rest of the catalogue it is fairly weak, it's simply that I enjoy most of the material that Billy has put out over the year, so most of it gets fairly high ratings from me :D

Hang on a minute... that isn't my baby! Molly, you bitch! No wonder I don't like this song, it's been a subconscious reminder of Molly's treachery all these years.

Not to be rude or anything, but what makes a song better than one another depends on the qualities each one has, and the values each individual places on the qualities. There are certainly things (I find, at least) that My Blue Heaven does better than Quiet, and vice versa. Of course MBH is going to score a 0 on the "Awesome Loud Rock Guitar" checkbox, but all of the high ratings aren't rating based on that... it's for other reasons. Other things the song does well, other emotions it touches...

It just seems that you are shocked when some people rate oranges as highly as apples.

You're entitled to think whatever the hell you want to about any given song. It makes no difference to me. But yeah, I am kind of shocked that this song is getting high ratings. There is nothing that MBH does better than Quiet in my book. Not one single thing. I'm just stating how I feel about this thread. But that's me. You think whatever you want to about it. That's what's great about music.

It's one of my least SP favourites - even of their covers (which mostly turn out to be stellar).
So I see your point.

For example, at the very least, (and by default) it does piano better. Objectively. This comes back to the certain qualities you decide to rate a song. If I applied the criteria that makes MBV a 10 to Quiet, Quiet would probably get a 1.1. But my standards would not limit me to criteria that are suited to some songs and ill applied to others - I find that I rate songs on their own terms, rather than trying to cram them in a universal mold and see how well they fit. Which should explain the vast majority of 10s. But your point about thinking whatever you want I completely agree with. Everybody does have their own criterias and values. Just, some applications of them may be invalid (general statement.)

Well I always thought My Blue Heaven was a nice a song and deserving of an 8.0. Meanwhile, I don't know if I voted during the "Quiet" round, but I think I would have given it an 8.5 or something. In general, I don't think I give most songs a 10 anyways. I rate them on how I feel about them as an individual song rather than in comparison to others. Of course I can recognize that I like My Blue Heaven better than The Bells but that I like The Last Song and The Aeroplane Flies High more than both of those. In some cases, I like harder-driven songs more and sometimes I like the softer ones more. But it's all a matter of preference.

Set The Ray To Jerry, The Airplane Flies High, Marquis In Spades, Rotten Apples, and Jupiters Lament, Medellia Of The Gray Skies fuck the rest! Those songs are all 10 / 10. They were too good to be B-Sides, they should have been on Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness.
