Amazing drumming, along with great lyrics (I don't know but I believe, if I feel safe what do I need?) carried along by great riffs and feedback scultping, coupled with the most powerful and probably my favorite solo from the Pumpkins (the boring middle as everyone else puts it :roll ) Then comes the awesome/dramatic "Let me ~ " end section, which slows down, congeals, then everything falls apart in that awesome churning maelstrom of a riff (8:51-9:12, my second favorite one behind WBFTT), before the final riff takes us out. Love this song to death. On every live version of this song I've heard, the screams are superb. My third favorite SP song behind Ruby and Stumbleine.

Like Superchrist, the heavy tomtom drumming and metallic guitar riffs definitely hint that Silverfuck was the template for this song. But all of them are different and experimental in their own ways. Silverfuck was more dynamic and full of energy than United States, but the downtuned guitar and the beastly drumming do make this song is a menace. Unfortunately, there's not many dynamics to this song and it gets tedious sometimes. Superchrist is like the unhinged, more experimental version of United States, and both of them pale in comparison to Silverfuck. But I still like it when I'm in the mood for it. And it's really cool live.

This deserves no. 1 zeitgeist song.
You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities...

I would put this up with Gossamer and Bleeding The Orchid as the ONLY gems from that era. Don't get me wrong, I love Zeitgeist, but in my opinion it was one of the poorest SP records. And that is really only due to Billy's vocals and the production. The guitars and drums (especially drums) on this record are nothing short of awesome.

United States is a little tame in-studio, but live it is a fookin' monster. Seen it twice, and it leaves me in awe each time. I especially love the end half of the song where it gets really heavy.

9/10

And the message in this song is pretty obvious, if you ask me. As another poster said, "I don't know what I believe, but if I feel safe, what do I need?" Couple that with the words revolution and the way our country is. While some are ambitious, many Americans stay under the radar. They believe everything their government tells them, they believe nothing can harm them, and thus do not step out of their own shadow. They almost don't have a 'mind' of their own. "I don't know what I believe, but if I feel safe, what do I need?"

I'm not sure where I am, who I should be or what I should be thinking, but freedom's nice. I'll stay right here.

I actually forgot it. :P

So, yeah. Those four. Of course, there are also the Residency Songs. Hmm...so really, a few more than I thought. Oh, well. I meant mainly recorded material, anyway.

I love Peace & Love.

I remember an episode of Politically Incorrect (which Billy was a guest on a few times) shortly after September 11th, in which Billy demanded "What is the government going to do to keep us safe?". Oh, Billy, you're so contradictory sometimes. :p

Political lyrics aside, this song is an impressive piece of work. It's still nice to hear a song that's dark, peculiar and (slightly) angry from Billy Corgan, and at almost 10 minutes long, it earns its place along other Pumpkin epics.
