Okay so my opinion really doesn't mean shit until I've given the album multiple listens but here's my opinion on it after first listen:
Overall, I enjoyed it. While it was a good listen, it still didn't strike me as BC "discovering" that soul he had supposedly been missing. His voice has really only marginally improved since Zeitgeist and half of that is due to production.
My biggest complaint though is that the album seems to lack sonic diversity. Remember when Stumbleine somehow perfectly shifted into XYU? Or maybe when Silverfuck transitioned seamlessly into Sweet Sweet? Yeah, I know I do. I didn't really hear much of that in this album. While we get some loud songs and we get some quiet songs, that's about it. The atmosphere remains somewhat stagnant and the album just sort of lulls and floats on to the next song. Unlike Zeitgeist, there weren't any immediately catchy pop/rock songs on this one. At least, I didn't really hear one. (while Zeitgeist had the epic Tarantula and That's the Way) The album ends a bit abruptly as well. Wildflower seems like a decent song, don't get me wrong. But the way it just sort of faded at the end sort of disappointed me. I was hoping for either a bittersweet lullaby-esque ending or, preferably, a fireworks show of a song that just explodes and fills me with energy! (like an Age of Innocenece esque ending)
The songs alone though are pretty damn good I thought! My highlights on first listen were Celestials, Violet Rays, Oceania, Pale Horse and Chimera. Pinwheels also stood out for how different it sounded. The beginning was a bit trying on me at first, but after the song set in and I absorbed it, I kinda dug it. I enjoyed getting to hear Nicoles backing vocals and although BC's voice doesn't seem THAT much better, he sure seems to enjoy the music he's making more than Zeitgeist. The next time I listen. I'm gonna have to pay more attention to Mikey's drumming. And with the shitty speakers I listened to Oceania on, I couldn't hear the bass much at all. Sorry Nicole!
Even though I have a lot of minor nitpicks and gripes, I still really enjoyed this album on first listen! (the only reason I'm so critical is because SP is my favorite band, haha) Take everything that I said with a grain of salt as I've only listened to it once and I'm probably full of shit. A definite buy and I can't wait to listen to a quality recording of it on my headphones!
