Ditto. I also figured this would have been a big hit with the SP crowd, since it uses the top 2 songwriting structures that define SP to me - the low-E platform and the Pumpkin's signature V-II-IV-I progression on the chorus. Surprising to me, it hasn't been cited much by the community as far as I can see.

Second favorite behind 1D1H. Easily my favorite rocker on the album - I've known that since the concert in October. This is just a perfect encapsulation of the Pumpkins spirit and style; it shows that the very, very best Pumpkins songs do not have to be dark to complete the atmosphere.

Good song, but can't say I love it yet. It's better live imo.

What recordings do you have of it KJ? I've got 10-05 and 10-10, and both of them have the guitars distractingly low and muffled in the mix.

Y'know, I'm not entirely sure, the whole album has the low end fairly drowned out though, so I'm hoping when I get the CD copy today, the sound quality will be better. Some songs might jump out at me alot more with a better quality recording.

This was a slow grower, but I'm starting to love it!

I really like this song. I especially love the backing vocals at the end of the first verse, which were a welcome addition from the earlier live versions played!
I also really like the production in this one, Billy's vocals are spot on in the mix which makes such a difference! With Zeitgeist production, this song wouldn't be anywhere near as effective!

From the SPIN review:
Byrne, who is, like, 12, and was apparently kidnapped from a Sam Ash mid-drum roll, is the easiest to isolate, of course; the impressive, tom-heavy rumble of "Panopticon" quickly asserts his lithe, explosive, decidedly Jimmy Chamberlain-esque ferocity, a deft balance of muscle and sinew. Schroeder presumably sneaked a few hot guitar lixxx in here somewhere. But Fiorentino is the revelation, her bass lines melodic and agitated and reassuring; listen to her prowl nimbly through the somber "Pale Horse," reigning in the slightly overwrought mellon collie while subtly adding to it, her similarly unassuming backing vocals both softening and sharpening the sting as Corgan moans "Thorazine / Thorazine / Thorazine."

^That was in a "professional" magazine? Seems like something vomited into a high school newspaper.

I'm fine with bashing SP if they release shit but bashing them for bashing them is kindergarten.

Agreed. Some people are so used to bashing recent Corgan works that it's become habit to bash anything he does, even if it's damn good!

Concluding our template of standard SP openers - Where Boys / Bodies, Cherub / Quiet, Doomsday / 7 shades: Panopticon follows the sequence left after Quasar flawlessly.

What strikes me most about this song, possibly more than any other song on Oceania, is that it has a classic undisputed SP1 sound to it. It could be compared to a lot of old songs, namely Rocket and Muzzle, as it captures a long lost enlightening element to it's explosiveness. The final build up is the most 'right' SP have sounded in a long long time. No growing, no adapting to the track, it's instantly a winner from the first listen.

It's great to hear the amount of effort going into Oceania so early on. Has to be the best 'track two' for SP since Ava Adore.

Should we go through rating the Oceania songs now, then get back to the pre-Gish stuff after that?
