Man, I really like the sounds of this box set! It's just the price that I don't like the sounds of! I'm hoping it goes down soon! ;)

It will get more expensive as it gets rare, just like the other re-issue box sets and the two Teargarden EPs.

it is odd but I sorta respect it in a way. while I wished (and sill do) to have it before it is released i can respect fans getting it early and not leaking it. either way i ordered the vinyl version it was one of the first things i wanted since i got a record player and look forward to it.

actually stream

You're going to be mad/disappointed with me Don, but I just spent a little under $100 on Masta Killa's deluxe box set of his new album. It was too tempting for me as there are ONLY 200 of them and they are all hand numbered and even have an autographed poster with them. I also spent the extra $15 to get the vinyl copy with it just for collection purposes. Not to mention it comes with a shirt and a hat and a lyrics book and his first 2 albums as well.

Part of me does think I should've bought the MCIS box set though.

I have never listened to Masta Killa but he/she/they have a hard time to be on one level with the Pumpkins in my book for sure :D

Well yes, I agree, Masta Killa isn't close the the level of the Pumpkins but the fact that his boxset was limited to 200 and had an autographed poster plus shirt and hat exploited my materialistic weaknesses! :)

So, Don, how many full non-album/b-side songs are on the MCIS bonus discs? i.e. ones with vocals too? And how many "new" instrumentals? And of those, how many are must-haves?

I just worry that like the Gish and SD bonus discs, it'll be a case of listen a couple of times and that's it (except for a few tracks).

Vocal songs not found on MCIS/Aeroplane in any form:

- Methusela essential!
- Autumn Nocturne essential!
- Lover
- Towers Of Rabble (Live) essential!
- Speed ÜBER essential!
- Isolation essential!
- Eye essential!
- One And Two
- Wishing You Were Real [=For Martha] essential!
- Phang essential! [the vox here are way in the back]

Instrumentals not found on MCIS/Aeroplane in any form:

- Feelium essential!
- Ascending Guitars
- Glamey Glamey
- Bagpipes Drone
- Knuckles
- Blast
- Fun Time
- Chinoise essential!
- New Waver
- Dizzle
- Zoom essential!

BUT this time, however, most of the alternate/instrumental versions of album songs are a blast and essential!, too.
Here's my choice of those:

- Tonight, Tonight (Strings Alone mix)
- X.Y.U. (Take 11)
- Zero (Synth mix
- Beautiful (Loop version)
- By Starlight (Flood rough)
- Thru The Eyes Of Ruby (Take 7)
- In The Arms Of Sleep (Early Live demo)
- 1979 (Sadlands demo)
- Galapagos (Instrumental/Sadlands demo)
- Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans (Live Studio rough) [PORCUPINE TREE VERSION!!!]
- Thru The Eyes Of Ruby (Acoustic version)
- Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Nighttime version 1)
- Fuck You (an ode to no one) (Production Master rough)
- Goodnight (Basic Vocal rough)
- Blank (Sadlands demo)
- Beautiful (Instrumental-Middle 8) [a blend with BY STARLIGHT!!!]
- Marquis In Spades (BT 2012 mix)
- Tonite Reprise (Version 1)

I say about 85%-90% of the bonus tracks is great!

Cheers, Don! It's my favourite album and the box set looks nice, but I was thinking most of the bonus stuff would be disappointing... but you've convinced me to get it :)

In the first moment I was disappointed by the few new songs but the alternate versions are the killer this time, no Starla 2011-mixes here :D

Yeah, Don's convinced me too. I just hope the price goes down some after Christmas, because I'm a cheapskate

Here's some settled thoughts on the MCIS box set:

Yesterday I was finally able to watch the DVD and yes, the bonus set features parts of the naked man show that was shown on German TV, even that particular scene but they used different camera angles. So you hardly ever see the naked man and when you see him, his noodle is blurred. I'm glad that most of James' comments still made the cut ("We like to thank the naked man!"..."The dancing man is the cousin of the naked man!") and they even included Billy's weird monologue about Rudi the striker :D .
The main show is a strong performance of many MCIS songs (the best part is a long jam-version of Ruby) and apart from the full and frontal-nudity naked man show, which I downloaded ages ago, this is more or less the best pre-Adore performance by SP I ever saw/heared.

Now I have meticulously compared the remaster of the album to the o-mix and maybe the most astounding result is that the remaster, even if it is mixed in a louder and more distinctive way, lacks the heaviness of the original.
Songs like XYU rawk out more but the underlying agressive atmosphere is missing due to the over-mixing. The bassiness of the old mix was what created a lot of the atmosphere. Maybe the worst failure was to slightly normalize the volume in some sections: The iconic launch of Porcelina has lost much of it's power and sounds a lot more like an SD mix.
Now I'm glad that I haven't ordered the vinyl. The changes aren't that noticeable at all but if you know your MCIS at heart, they will disturb your experience.

Concerning the bonus discs, you can not beat the 17-outtakes bonus CD of the Pisces box set, of course, but the more I listen to Morning Tea, High Tea and Special Tea, the more they alomst sound like three different MCIS era compilations orbiting the core releases (MCIS & Aeroplane). Morning Tea is pretty much your MCIS outtake and alternative versions compilation, High Tea the one that features the less album related stuff that is worthy your attention and Special Tea is like the experimental tape that features stuff which didn't make the cut due to it's unusual character. I listen to the bonus discs more than anything else these days and they're growing on me with each day. I'm glad they've beaten the Gish/SD bonus discs which were a mild disappointment to everyone I think, featuring few interesting cuts at all.

Bring on Aeroplane, Adore and MACHINA!
I can't wait for Adore, I know there are millions of great songs that didn't make it and I'm curious what the bonus section will look like.

On the DVD is it the full 2 and a half hour show, plus a few extra bits? When the tracklist was advertised for it, they only listed about ten or so songs from the main show.

Nope, it's maybe one hour of that show only. According to Billy, everything but the TV cut got lost for some reason...

What was this forum's consensus on the Gish reissue?

Beautiful box set with great liner notes, cards and photos, an overproduced album remaster, a hit and miss bonus disc and a weird, weird, weird live show on DVD. :billy
It's a shame but I hardly come back to this reissue; I always listen to the SD remaster and I often play the Pisces bonus album (let alone that I gaze at the MCIS box every day ever since), but there's really few to come back here, though...

Yeah, the Gish re-issue is pretty crap, to be honest.

I haven't listened to or watched the SD re-issue yet.

The Pisces was one was worth it just for the bonus disc.
