TOPIC: Fan Meet Ups

Fan Meet Ups 6 years 4 months ago #16971

Have any of you attended any fan meet-ups stemming from The Pumpkin Queen's MySpace initiative (with local fan pages)?
I went to the Baltimore, MD one today. It was pretty interesting, low key, nice people, good conversation. We did a short video of us and I'll try to post a pic as soon as I get one from one of the guys with a camera.

Just passing it on - if there is a local fan group in your area - it's a good way to meet cool people with the same interests.

Thats awesome!
In December I was planning on moving back to SoCal, but that fell through, or else I was gonna go to the Los Angeles one.
It would be nice to meet people locally who love SP as much as I do.
Maybe I should put a flyer up at school! :billy

Yeah Pumpkin Queen only shows up to the ones in cities she is going to be in anyways. She is stationed in LA, so she went to that one. If I remember correctly the reason why there was a first UK meetup was because she was going to be in the UK to see The Boxer Rebellion, and that started all this meetup stuff (aside from established fan groups that had already meetups one kind or another). She had suggested that SP might do meet and greets later on for the most active fan meetup pages, but if that happens at all, it will be during the tour.

It's good that you had some fun at your Baltimore meetup. We had our Toronto meetup yesterday (Sunday). While it was bigger than our Winnipeg and Calgary ones, 8 people only showed up. We had a great time despite this, having Pumpkins rarities, b-sides and live tracks playing over the sound system. We also discussed our experiences seeing the band or lack thereof, thoughts on the reunion, and other tidbits.

But to put in perspective, including guests, 26 people had 'confirmed' on the event invite, and 42 said 'maybe'. To say I am disappointed in those that confirmed and said nothing to change that (given ample opportunity), would be putting it lightly.

It's a shame, it could have been even better time as the venue (a pub that allows all ages before 9 pm), opened up the 2nd floor especially for us. We had told the venue given the confirmed people and the amount of maybes that we would be expecting 30 people. I am concerned that because so many people didn't show up when they promised to, that the venue will not grant any further requests for party bookings from us (we were able to get the 2nd floor for free!). My hope is that we gave them enough business to allow us to do meetups there in the future :(.

On the bright side of things, we will have a short video hopefully ready for tommorrow to put up. For the next meetup, I suppose more people will show up since it will be spring, and then we can get more footage that would be fitting to put in an sp fan documentary. Since there was only 8 of us this time around, we ended up shooting 20 minutes out of the 4 hours (we would not have shot more than an hour anyways) and cut it down to 4 or 5 minutes.

There was some weirdness/sillyness that some of the people did for the camera that just didn't fit with the rest of the footage, so at most it will show up as a 'deleted scene' at some point. It just didn't fit as documentary footage.

These fan meet ups sound really cool :o. I'm not a member of myspace though so yeah...

I live in a suburub of Chicago so I would be able to attend one there very easily, what's the average age group? And what's this about filming, do you guys make movies while together?

Well the way I see it, it should not be limited to Myspace, some people seem to have a resistance on Myspace seem to have resistance to go outside of Myspace. On my website's message board, I create forums for further discussion for the Canadian SP fan page I co-run, as well as forums for Belgian, Texas, and Californian SP fan pages. But most people seem to have this attitude of 'I have to register for something else?'. When it really takes five seconds :p

I think we are limiting ourselves by just restricting things to myspace.

Well, not all the meetups are filmed. But we are trying to put together a SP fan documentary, trying to get as many of the SP fan groups from around the globe to submit segments from their meetups.

Here is a link to a snippet from our meetup. It is supposed to be widescreen, but Myspace seems to have stretched it to full screen:
vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vi...l&videoid=1936745023

and just in case your wondering, we didn't write on the sandwich board at the pub, that is what greeted us when we got there.

Sounds pretty cool. Just a shame that I don't know any fans who live near me...

It was just a local meet-up, no Pumpkin Queen, but she initiated the "local area" meetups and asked for pics and videos from them to be used in a documentary.

Ooooooh, documentary? It'd be cool if there was a bonus DVD with Zeitgeist that's called "Anticipation," and it features some of those meetups. But I'm guessing it'll just be on their myspace.

Well my brother proposed an idea for an SP fan documentary, that would be a compilation of videos from meetups across the world (an expansion of an idea from a Listessa Fan video we did, Fanphoria that we presented to SP in 2000). He posted this on December 18th. But then after the LA meetup, it was finally mentioned by someone planning the 2nd UK meetup, that TPQ had told people at the first UK meetup (on December 9th) that he was keen on fans filming their meetups, to show them in their element.

It's not clear what exactly was communicated, so its unclear whether Billy had the exact same idea as my brother did. But I guess it shows that we are all on same wavelength, even though we did not know about this until MUCH later. What is weird about this is that TPQ had responded before the LA meetup to a blog comment I made. I mentioned about what we thought was an original idea, about the whole SP Fan documentary thing that had been around for a few weeks. She said something to the effect of "That's a great idea! Tell him to start compiling, I mean it!". I would have thought given what we know now, that she would of have said "Great idea, but Billy already thought of it!".

So do you think at the time of the first UK meetup, Billy only had a vague idea of what he wanted? What I mean to say is that maybe he just knew he wanted fans to film their meetups, not necessarily thinking as far as a documentary at that point?

I run the Omaha fan page, we'll be having a meetup sometime soon...hopefully

I really need to find a good place mainly, and get my camera back from the shop. Itd be good to have a place that would allow us to have a space to ourselves, and play sp music

as for myspace, i know it seems kind of bad to limit it just to myspace

but really it's the best way to get that word around. the majority of people have myspace, and it provides all the tools needed to organize that type of thing...in the beginning, i found a lot of the members by doing searches for "smashing pumpkins" in profiles and it worked great

but I dont think people should say "screw that, it's myspace"
it's kinda like "i dont want to conform" or something like that, i dunno

my friend has a myspace just for pages like this..you dont have to constantly be on it, just watch your email for new messages and things so you know what's going on

anyway, that documentary sounds like a sweet idea...i'll definitely get some footage of the omaha meetup

I wish the search tools on Myspace were a bit more precise so we could find people that are only SP fans and only live in the areas we specify. Sometimes when I try to search for say 'Smashing Pumpkins Montreal', it comes up with people from Tennesse who like some band with Montreal in the title. The normal people search doesn't allow interests/music people like into the equation.

About the whole Myspace thing. I even had one person at the meetup say we should go onto facebook either in addition or instead, claiming that adverstisers are switching over to Facebook and 'no one uses Myspace anymore'. There is only so many thing I can look after all at once, and I don't think switching over to Facebook is going to be any better. There are just going to be as many people apathetic and disinterested, despite agreeing to on a friends list of a fan meetup page, on Facebook.
