Pumpkins biggest hit and for damn good reason.

10/10
You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities...

Obviously clichè, but as overplayed as this song is, it's unquestionably a well-written song--both lyrically and musically. It's not the first track I'm dying to listen to on MCIS, but you cannot deny the simplicity and beauty of this song.

Well said. I don't really think it is cliche, or I don't see what you mean. I wish it wasn't so overplayed. I guess there is a reason why it is.

I like it, but agree on the overplayed comments. Still I'm giving it a 9.2

My love for you just can't explain

Forever lost inside ourselves

Highest played song in my iTunes library (besides for Endless Summer, 'cuz I left it on repeat when I was gone for two days). And I use my iPod ALOT. This song is pure bliss, and probably the song I'd choose to represent everything BC ever did with the Pumpkins. 10.

My favorite part is the little break in the middle. "Faster than we thought we'd go." I'm going to give it an 8.5. I don't listen to the radio, so I've never heard it more than needed.

When I say overplayed, I was mainly saying that 1979, Zero and Bullet, Today etc, are like the only songs people seem to know. I do love it, so to me it is not overplayed but, just the fact that out of the all the other GREAT SP songs to play on the radio (I really don't listen to the radio..) they will play 1979 or the others I mentioned over anything else SP had done.

Sorry, now I got ya.
German radio doesn't know any 90s bands but Nirvana (and two of their songs).

Re: RATE A SONG - 1979 2 years 3 months ago #80989

How does one rate perhaps "the" iconic pumpkins song? The song that, as the story goes, billy worked on and and worked on and fought for and almost didn't make the album.... that became the one song non-pumpkins fans associate(I'm perhaps incorrectly generalizing here) as that "one song I like from clerks II." Obviously mixed feelings for any fan... would I like it more if it were a secret track on a barely released alternate version only sold in zimbabwe of the aeroplane flies high box set which went on ebay for $300.00? Or do I like it more because I'm glad the band I love gets world attention for a song that really is a very billy-esque song?

I have mixed feelings as well - it's so easy for me to like this song -- because it's just so damn fucking likeable -- especially the "flanged" billy voice as part of the background recurring sounds -- and the lyrics ring true for pretty much all of america -- but it's hard for me to love this song like i do songs such as rhinoceros, hummer, or jellybelly because it just doesn't have the same emotional weight as those songs do for me. On some days, a 6, on some days, a 10-- so I'll even it out and make it shaken down 8.

This song is and always has been my obsession. It's the song that got me into the pumpkins, and to this day is still fresh as the day I first listened to it.

10 absolutely!:heart

Somewhat recently, Pitchfork rated the 200 best songs of the 90s. 1979 rated as number 21 on that list, the highest Pumpkins song. For those who haven't seen it, here's the explanation.

"It seems very wrong to reduce an important band's highest-charting single to one sound, but sorry, that whooshing progression that repeats through "1979" is amazing enough to hang a whole career on. That floating guitar figure seems to hold all the wistfulness, sadness, hope, and redemption that the Smashing Pumpkins wanted to get across in the 1990s, and everything else-- and they released a ton of great music then, don't let the last 10 years obscure that-- was pretty much gravy. Somehow that riff and the song's title-- '79 was a pivotal year for Corgan's generation, signaling the end of the last decade that would be spent only in childhood-- must have motivated Billy Corgan to speak in straightforward and human terms. Here he wasn't whining, he wasn't throwing a tantrum, he didn't want to be the voice of a generation or be someone's therapist. Instead, he put together a cluster of images that was more about an undefined feeling than a message, and it happened to be the most universal sentiment he'd ever manage. "1979" was Billy Corgan asking, "You know this feeling?" and the second you heard that guitar line the immediate answer was, "I do-- tell me more." --Mark Richardson"

A great interpretation of the song, in my opinion. Billy has mentioned several times this song is his best achievement. While it's not my favorite, even on this disc, it's still an amazing song. 9.

This may be the highest rating I give a song. Like the snippet above says, this is a song that you can feel.
