I think youtube is a big enough market now to justify making music videos. I agree that there's really no good music video TV anymore (nothing widely available, anyway), but on-demand services, such as youtube or whatever people watch videos with on their cellphones, still attract enough eyeballs to keep them relevant.

Billy himself said that he wasn't happy with the Cherub Rock video. I think he said it in the commentary on the greatest hits dvd.

I think videos are the best tool for luring in new fans. They really need to get at least one out there. And if I was SP management I would choose The Fellowship out of all the current TBK songs to make a video for.

I'd really rather they focused on writing / recording more songs instead of making videos. And I'd say the same for all bands. There are a few select videos that I absolutely love (the SP ones I mentioned above, Glósóli by Sigur Rós, etc.), but in most cases I'm not really bothered.

Actually, Arcade Fire's new "video" was a really really cool idea. Beware though, it uses a lot of memory...so close everything else before you try it. Google Chrome would help too.

As for videos luring in new fans, I don't think that's the way it works nowadays - do people even watch videos anymore? They're more likely to catch a bit of a song somewhere than catch the video.

I tried that a month or two ago because of the hype and I was extremely disappointed. It was really cheesy and dumb.

But why do you watch a music video on youtube? Because you want to see that music video. With MTV, you watched, and they showed you whatever videos were playing - thus exposing you to new stuff.

Music videos have their place on youtube, but I wouldn't say they're anywhere near as promotional there as they used to be on television.

Instead of MTV recommending songs, your friends and "friends" and algorithms based on your "friends" recommend songs to you. There are also quite a few recommendation algorithms that, in many cases, are pretty good at picking other stuff you'd like.

Right, but you still have to make the conscious decision to click on a band that does or doesn't look interesting in a sidebar somewhere.

Cherub Rock is better than Rocket. You're welcome! :D

But my favorites would have to be

1. Tonight, Tonight
2. Zero
3. Siva

My least favorite: Try, Try, Try.
Can you say, 'heavy-handed'?

Try Try Try is pretty fucked up.

Has anyone else noticed when she is having the visions of the family in the Try Try Try video, the guy in the red plaid jacket is looking at some really hardcore porn? Look for it. I just noticed it.

1. Tonight, Tonight
2. Thirty-Three
3. 1979

And my least favorite would probably be That's The Way (My Love Is). I never really liked the Zeitgeist videos all that much.

Yeah, I just noticed that too. Maybe the director wanted to make up for the birth scene by showing us some non-bloody vadge...

I just remembered...my other favorite video of all time!

People still watch music videos. Internet hasn't killed the TV! The internet and TV are just merging. Forming an alliance if you will. Definately not killing it. MTV came close to destroying TV but no cigar because unfortunately some still actually watch it. Maybe MTV felt they had to change because artists that possess true artistic musicianship and that have integrity (as they should) were in decline. Or was it because MTV executives made a bad decision and moved to a new outlet and the viewers just went with the flow. Maybe it was the Britneys that raped the music biz in the early 2000's (possibly a reason Billy broke up his band at the time) or maybe it was just the fact that people could get free music with just the use of a computer and an internet connection. For whatever the reason, society is really missing out on some decent rock n roll! I mean there is still some good musicians out there if you search for them but still far too few.

There must be rocking musical gods out there that never pursuad their career further cos of the way society was moving. Forget the 'has beens' of the world, there are some which should be recognized as the 'could of beens"! Just imagine the music that we could be listening to today if it weren't for the internet and reality shows. Not saying the internet is a bad thing (reality shows obviously are) but just remove the internet from the equation....Firstly you wouldn't be reading this, and instead you might be sitting down with your partner and taking a record/CD from the cover and listening to a full album from beginning to end while looking at the nice artwork of the album. Then engaging in some deep conversation about the meaning of life before residing to the bedroom to do what what ever it is you desire! We might not be doing that exactly today, well at least not all the time but thank God and Billy we still have The Smashing Pumpkins...Billy and his sidekicks are one of the last remaining gods of rock (Oh and Tenacious D of course still have the ROCK too!) :=)

I still belive music videos are just as important these days as they were successful in the 90's. Beavis and Butthead were like gods back in the day.. Bring back the biff!! Of course they still make videos these days.... Have a look at the billboard charts today...you aint in the Top 40 without a video for your song even if the song has absolutely no integrity! But the question is, do people still watch them? I think they do but I would love to see some statistics on the ratings of videos and if the highest percentage of views were watched on youtube, mobiles or traditional TV. Would be awesome if someone out there conducted a survey. Anyway here where I live in New Zealand we have Juice TV and they play only music videos. It is awesome. They thankfully have not succumb to the bullshit that is reality shows (or more like un-reality!). Yes we have MTV and other music TV channels as well such as C4. And they do play your fair share of Pimp my ride, Punked and Meet the goddamn Kardations or whoever they are! But at least C4 plays music vids outside prime time. I am interested to know...does MTV or other music TV channels for that matter in America only play reality shows 24-7 now? Surely they must play music vids even if its overnight...and what about the top 40 countdown??

Since the introduction of iPods, I think the number of listeners to radio have plummeted too. So videos are a perfect outlet for people when they are home just pottering around that have music TV on in the background. it worked in the 90's why can't it work now. If MTV went back to their old ways, record companies might actually improve on their sales and quite possibly more consumers would be happy to purchase music legally.

Music videos in the 90's rocked so why shouldn't they too 2010's? You might say we've moved on from that era but a lot of music these days suck so surely it can only get better. Society needs to change somehow and if there is no answer maybe we should go back to our roots when it comes to entertainment and sit around the radio/TV and have some quality family time instead of all glued to our computer screens.

Anyway bla bla (sorry for the long post)... But I would be curious to know...what does MTV USA consist of these days?? Can someone in the know inform me. Cheers. And by the way you may be surprised but I reckon a lot of people (especially students) don't have broadband so have limited access to youtube hence cannot watch music vids on the net. Without broadband they would turn to the TV or radio and it might seem old fashioned but I believe these forms of media do still entice listeners to go out and buy records....your thoughts??

I know this post aint related to much to SP but I just believe that if SP want to rule the earth again (like Billy said recently) they have to look at all avenues. Get a video out there to get people listening/talking again. And for the record I'm the type of guy that lives in the now and thinks of the future. But I have always believed that we should honor our past too for we wouldn't be here without out it and neither would rock n roll baby!!

Billy actually said that they are working on two videos for "Freak". One is being done by Linda Strawberry's husband, Justin Coloma, who also did the music videos for "Superchrist" and "G.L.O.W.". I honestly haven't really liked any of the new music videos that have come from the band since 2007. :thumbsdown

Dude's probably not getting paid to produce them, I'm guessing it's all just for his resume to have Billy Corgan on there. :roll

Oh, and of course, cause Strawberry's married to Coloma, so duh.
