Smashing Pumpkins tangent thread 2 years 6 months ago #74606

What with the 300+ songs in the SP catalog, as well as probably dozens of other artists you listen to, there might be a few songs that just never appealed to you, that you never bothered to ever sit down and listen. I thought of this topic because I just listened to Superchrist for the first time despite having it in my library for about 2 years now (Chalk up another SP2 victory :billy ). Packaged with the G.L.O.W. single I was extremely wary after listening to aforementioned shitstain and just never played it.
So as for the topic, here are the songs I have yet to listen to completely and deeply:

Blissed and Gone
Soot and Stars
Waiting
My Mistake
Why Am I SoTired?
The point of the thread now is random pumpkins topics that come into your head. :D

The intros to all those songs really turned me off, but I'm gonna try em sometime. Gotta buy Vieuphoria to get the last one :(

I assume you all have listened to every song then? xD

First of all: Great topic Sikamikanico999 :yay .

Well, concerning the original SP (from 1987 to 2000), there's only one song I refuse listening to.
I've mentioned it a thousand times but it can't be mentioned often enough:
Bullet With Butterfly Wings.
This was Billy's very only lowpoint with SP1, the sell-out; this was Billy selling his ass to the bosses of Virgin records and to stupid grunge kiddies, too.
Every other recording of them, every lo-fi demo and outtake is a delight to me and I can't find one weak tune besides, but I hate hate hate hate hate BWBW!!!
By the way: Give those skippers from Judas O a try, they're great!

Then there is the entire discography of Sonic Youth which I love, every one of their 20+ albums, but I can't stand their 1990 release Goo which also was a pop-grunge sell-out. And I consider myself being a Sonic Youth hardliner.

The album In Absentia by the British prog-rockers Porcupine Tree is an alright, maybe an a bit too handsome album with a nice flow, but the 2nd song on it, called Trains, totally turns me off and I skip it almost every time I lsiten to the album...this is another song hailed by many fans which seems shallow and lame to me.

man, I guess I'll never understand Don's intense BWBW and Goo hate :roll I don't really see how BWBW is all that different from songs like Zero and Ode to No One in terms of appealing to tortured grunge kiddies...

Let's see, I still haven't given all the Gravity demos a proper listen. Until a few months ago, I never gave pre-Gish stuff a proper listen either, but now it's some of my favorite stuff ever—Reel Time Sessions I loooove, and also songs Jennifer Ever and There It Goes are some of my favorites ever.

Ummmm.... I still haven't gotten Judas O, so I've only heard the songs exclusive to it only once or twice. I still haven't listened to Reel Time Sessions or Ignoffo Tape. I also haven't listened to 6234 and a lot of other songs they have only played live. I also haven't listened to the the Ransom or Stigmata soundtracks. I have some work to do. :roll Sorry for not being more specific.

I'd say most of the pre-Gish stuff is the less listened to on my part.

There is some great pre-gish stuff: The Vigil, There it Goes, She, Nothing and Everything, Sun, My Dahlia, Snap all classics. There are others like Screaming that I haven't heard and the 6343 whatever song.

I haven't given Why am I so Tired more than two listens either.
Don't listen to Blue Skies Alt. Heavy Metal Macine Alt. White Spyder, Cash Car Star, Soul Power cause they suck.
Haven't heard much of God, Mouths of Babes, Tribute To Johnny.
Haven't heard much of Smiley.
Listen to BWBW on repeat.

I also share Don's hate for BWBW I think as well from time to time it's okay but most the time it really does bore me, idk why it just seems like it's the one song on there that was on there to be a single and sell money which is fine

You can find it on the Rarities And B-Sides collection on iTunes. Don't try to buy the physical copy. I have a story about what happened to me when I did. Let Mellon Collie grow on you. It's my favorite album of all time.

what happened when you tried to buy it? you just need the Rotten Apples with the second bonus disc.

Trains is great! I especially like listening to it on the train. Because I'm mentally ill.
In Abesntia isn't my favourite PT album - not even close really - but I still think it's very good. And surely you prefer it to Deadwing??
