Here's a mini review of my thoughts on the Pisces re-issue:
Disc 1 -- 0/10
Don't worry, it's 0 only for people who already own Pisces. It does sound slightly different, but only very slightly. And, if anything I'd say it doesn't sound quite as good as the original version. Still, for those who don't own Pisces, this would be worth
8/10, just like the original album.
Disc 2 -- 8/10
A great collection of songs and it makes me really happy to have them sounding this good, rather than the poor mp3 versions I had of most of them before. It's a whole extra 1990s Pumpkins album. To be honest, from the vast wealth of songs to choose from I would've put others on rather than Jesus Loves His Babies, Jackie Blue and the shitfest that is French Movie Theme (I know it's supposed to be funny, but it just bugs me). Also, although I like Why Am I So Tired and a fifteen minute jam is a cool way to end the album, I don't know if putting three or four other songs on instead would've been better.
The highlights, for me, are: Glynis, Crawl, Blissed, Translucent and Purr Snickety.
I really just wish we could get more albums like this using more of that early material. The Gish and SD bonus discs could've given us two more, but sadly not.
DVD -- 8/10
Billy's intro made me think this was going to be pretty bad sound/video quality, but I needn't have worried. It's not amazing, but perfectly good. The performance is good, for a "for cameras" performance, but mainly it's just nice to have a DVD of the band in their beginnings.
The bonus stuff is pretty amazing though, better really than the main show. The stuff from 91-94 is how alternative rock should be played. A bit of distortion, plenty of feedback, a singer who's just giving his all, not caring too much about how "perfect" he sounds. That's how rock music should be, but sadly that's often missing these days. I miss it
Oh, and is there a kind SP fan who got the demo tape songs on MP3 with this re-issue that would be nice enough to share them with a nice young man (I mean me)? I'd really like good quality versions (compared to the 128k MP3s I currently have) but have no way of transferring them from the cassette myself...
