TOPIC: The Album Re-Issues

Re: The Album Re-Issues 9 months 3 weeks ago #115286

Here's a mini review of my thoughts on the Pisces re-issue:

Disc 1 -- 0/10
Don't worry, it's 0 only for people who already own Pisces. It does sound slightly different, but only very slightly. And, if anything I'd say it doesn't sound quite as good as the original version. Still, for those who don't own Pisces, this would be worth 8/10, just like the original album.

Disc 2 -- 8/10
A great collection of songs and it makes me really happy to have them sounding this good, rather than the poor mp3 versions I had of most of them before. It's a whole extra 1990s Pumpkins album. To be honest, from the vast wealth of songs to choose from I would've put others on rather than Jesus Loves His Babies, Jackie Blue and the shitfest that is French Movie Theme (I know it's supposed to be funny, but it just bugs me). Also, although I like Why Am I So Tired and a fifteen minute jam is a cool way to end the album, I don't know if putting three or four other songs on instead would've been better.
The highlights, for me, are: Glynis, Crawl, Blissed, Translucent and Purr Snickety.
I really just wish we could get more albums like this using more of that early material. The Gish and SD bonus discs could've given us two more, but sadly not.

DVD -- 8/10
Billy's intro made me think this was going to be pretty bad sound/video quality, but I needn't have worried. It's not amazing, but perfectly good. The performance is good, for a "for cameras" performance, but mainly it's just nice to have a DVD of the band in their beginnings.
The bonus stuff is pretty amazing though, better really than the main show. The stuff from 91-94 is how alternative rock should be played. A bit of distortion, plenty of feedback, a singer who's just giving his all, not caring too much about how "perfect" he sounds. That's how rock music should be, but sadly that's often missing these days. I miss it :(

Oh, and is there a kind SP fan who got the demo tape songs on MP3 with this re-issue that would be nice enough to share them with a nice young man (I mean me)? I'd really like good quality versions (compared to the 128k MP3s I currently have) but have no way of transferring them from the cassette myself...

I agree with you on the album, itself. I prefer the original over the reissue.

epitome, I always thought French Movie Theme was beautiful for some reason.

It's like a comedic version of a perfume commercial, isn't it?

I love French Movie Theme! At least in the Pisces Reissue they removed the national anthem bit at the end.

I think Obscured was the song most improved by the remaster--the beats hit harder and its more resonant. I'm still a bit disappointed by those 2012 mixes though, I liked the echo-yness of the old mp3s, but these new mixes they made the vocals stand out too much

According to my receipt mine shipped on the 11th but I'm still waiting for it to arrive. Everyday for a week now I've been running to the post office expecting it to be there. :sigh

Have you ordered it at the official Topspin store?
They're the lamest thing of all times but at least they deliver...some day.
I've order some merch there and that took them one week only to get it ready and another three weeks to deliver it (and it usually takes two weeks at max, from the US to Germany).
Last Edit: 9 months 3 weeks ago by DON.

It better be Epitome or I'm holding you personally responsible for my 36 dollars! ;)

I really hope the MCIS reissue delivers. I hope BC includes EXTENSIVE liner notes describing his thoughts and experiences with every tune. That would be amazing! :yay

A live show from that era should be worth the re-issue anyway :) I hope they choose a really good one. And it'd be nice if it was widescreen, but I don't suppose many gigs were filmed in widescreen back then.

Yeah probably not, but as long as the sound quality and the show is good, I'll be satisfied.

Just got my reissue yesterday, been thoroughly enjoying it, but I noticed this while reading the liner notes: (not sure if you guys have already been over this or not)

In Soothe, Billy IS saying "Hungry again..." not Hold me, so that puts that myth to rest.

And, in Whir, Billy actually never says Whir. I used to think he was saying "Whir yourself around" but according to the liner notes, he's saying "Worry yourself around". And he doesn't say, :"Lets go for a whir" he is saying, "Let's go for a whirl".

Pumpkins lyrics finally set in stone for me. :)

Also, does anyone know what significance the pictures/postcards have? Are they pictures from Billy? (Taken by Billy, or maybe from his childhood?)

By the way, did anyone ever figure out the meaning behind his "Peace and Love 2007" comment? I'm looking past the coincidence that he wrote a song with that name in 2007.... ;)

It's his family I guess....just a guess because everything SP related seems to go back to Billy's past :D .

That's what I figured.

What do you guys think will be included on the Adore reissue? I'm definitely hoping for a DVD of a live show, and on the bonus disc, I bet we'll see Chewing Gum, Once in a While, and maybe Blissed and Gone. But do you guys think BC will include the Adore ere version of Let Me Give the World to You? That would be cool imo.
