After our demo EP last March, here’s our first self made DIY album called “die schwarze leinwand” (=the black theatre screen)

Our band has grown, featuring Sofia on vocals now.
This time we tried to give the whole thing a logical concept with a brighter a-side and a pitch black b-side, but since no one listens to vinyl anymore (and we can’t afford letting any be made), you have the idea at least.

So here’s my in-depth personal track by track analysi:
1. die schwarze leinwand:
Pretty much the intro of all things and our first song tied down into one because it really happened as one piece.
I played the piano line one day we had a chat in our rehearsal cellar and Maxim liked it that much that we tried to turn it into a song – but my ideas on the keyboard are always limited and so I went over to the guitar and the result is some odd bendings Kim Gordon would be proud of and a real catchy indie rock song at the core of it all getting as close to the SP sound as possible without re-recording Hummer.
Sofia’s singing on this one is stunningly precise and beautiful and I love how the first line on the whole record says “Our plan was escaping”.
That said, the lyrics are complete non-sense written as a filler until some good ones appear…but we unfortunately suddenly liked them.
The samples, again, are Reinhard Bonnke, that insane charismatic Christian evangelist preacher you might know…or maybe not.
2. #1
The sole intro to the following track, though it was recorded and intended as one track, we decided to take #1 from our first recording and Futures In Bones from take two.
Cutting it together wouldn’t work because of the volume differences, so here’s two seperate tracks without a brake meant to run together.
The SP rip off solo at the end came out of nowhere but it felt right – hope Billy won’t kill me.
3. futures in bones
This track once should be titled “Futures In Balls” after the famous James Rolfe quote but since the lyrics rather deal with a heartbreak and go on explaining transsexualism.....
Musically this is one of my favourites, everything went better than expected, the jazz drumming, brilliant singing, a bass guitar shooting out shapes and my guitar turning from SP sound to noise rock.
Staying on SP, Maxim literally does the Chamberlin in the middle section.
It has the classic prog rock structure I guess…but then again how could prog have some?
Never mind, futures in bones is maybe the track representing best our vision as a band.
Love that one, check it out!
4. schilder einer baustelle
You never go wrong with a song quoting the 60s just to bring in the post rock bass line of all post rock bass lines.
This instrumental always had a special place in our heart because this should be the only song we always performed without mistakes.
The main theme is one of the most addictive things I have heard so far and, again, it came out of nowhere with me pressing some buttons on our keyboard switched to organ sound.
The song eventually was there after 10 minutes of us jamming around.
A miracle, play this on your radio station!
5. omne verbam/die dauer der realität betragt exakt 30 millisekunden
The title of it is complete bullshit.
That said, this one rocks and is my other favourite.
The first half is what you might call gothic rock I guess, if there was anything gothic left that wasn’t plundered.
Dark and elegiac with the female singing you always need for this perfectly brought in by Sofia.
After another SP solo (shame on me) it goes into part two that starts with some hypnotic post rock and my favourite lyrics on the whole record “This was the first dream I ever had in which I didn’t die”
Sung without any pathos but with the voice of a woman that knows what those lines mean.
We always write all the music together and everyone once in a while brings in lyrics and those being my favourite lyrics, were written by Sebastian.
The whole song reminds me of him and it wouldn’t have worked without his brilliant input, because the second half suddenly explodes into some hard grunge riffing, turning into a Sonic Youth solo, turning back into grunge and being ultimately devoured by the most hypnotic synth-like bass guitar I have ever heard.
Hats-off to Sebastian!
This song is a tour de force and makes its 10 minutes feel like 3.
6. black is you
The only re-recording from the old demo.
We haven’t changed anything about the structure and just added in the singing.
It improves the song but it unfortunately shows how monotonous some parts really are and this is why we added many samples in this one.
It’s a dark and haunting noise rock odyssey but it feels like a great ending to the hard rocking songs on this album.
7. tape
This silent song marks a good ending as far as I’m concerned…just some lonely singing and a clam bass and guitar outside in the rain.
The text deals with changes, angst, loss and everything and is supposed to reflect a lonely person’s stream of consciousness.
Again, I think Sofia’s singing on this is superb and deserves some extra appreciation.
Thanks for reading.
