i voted for Costello. the lyrics were a bit lacking and repetitive, but it was alright.

i did listen to the Titanic one and yes i had a laugh because of the Titanic association. it is just too sappy though in parts and just too typical mundane movie score with that 'suspenseful' bit at the end. i have nothing against film scores or instrumentals. i listen to soundtracks, classical, and other instrumental stuff all of the time. this one just doesn't really stand out to me and i didn't particularly care for the composition of it. some instrumentals pieces from soundtracks can stand alone, but this one really doesn't to me and its just typical sounding especially at the end. its kind of underdeveloped and mundane as a stand alone piece away from the rest of the soundtrack.

Wow, Costello has taken a huge lead.

Um Both not my cup of tea.

However voting for the soundtrack song, simply because it was better than the other one.

Alright you're going to call me out, you're going to get a response.

I do approach every one of these polls with a neutral openness, this one included. That's the entire idea behind this thing. To hear things you wouldn't normally hear and maybe discover some cool stuff along the way. I never vote on image. This is about the music. I did not vote against your song because it was in a soppy movie. I voted against it because it too is soppy. OK, it has dynamic to it, but there was absolutely zero emotional impact on me. It's not my kind of music, and it did absolutely nothing to make me ever want to listen to it again. Therefore, it doesn't get my vote. Plain and simple.

If you want to play sour grapes and whine off into the distance because your song didn't win, that's your choice. I say don't be a baby about it. Just because you like the song doesn't mean everybody else has to.

Yes, it's one thing to be open to something and give it a try. It's another to feel you have to like it just because it's different. I gave both these songs a fair listen, but didn't enjoy the Titanic one at all. And I listen to a fair few movie scores, so I'm not against well composed instrumental pieces. I just didn't like that soppy wannabe-Irish attempt.

Costello defeats Titanic 9 - 3

Which means that Sikamikanico999 is eliminated with song choices of -

- Iron Wine - Naked as we Came (Win)
- Jeff Buckley - Mojo Pin (Loss)
- Titantic Soundtrack - Unwilling to Stay, Unable to Leave (Loss)

Very well.
I do approach every one of these polls with a neutral openness, this one included.

"Titanic? Seriously? It's hard for me not to laugh at the absurdity of that. Costello gets my vote by default."

Your hypocrisy apparently disagrees with you. Or would you rather adopt the title of "liar?"
That's the entire idea behind this thing. To hear things you wouldn't normally hear and maybe discover some cool stuff along the way. I never vote on image.

I hold that everyone does to some extent and you are being dishonest/uncritical if you don't think so. I feel slighted in this case because there seems to be a much, much larger proportion of it than I could have anticipated.

OK, it has dynamic to it, but there was absolutely zero emotional impact on me. It's not my kind of music, and it did absolutely nothing to make me ever want to listen to it again. If your the collective board's actions actually followed these words I would have zero problem with you or anyone else here.
If you want to play sour grapes and whine off into the distance because your song didn't win, that's your choice.

Watch me give a damn if my song wins or not. It's the principle being shat on that pisses me right the fuck off. I stopped caring about the competition when Jeff Buckley lost - I knew from the get go this was probably going to lose, but I figured a few people would like Horner's melody. I didn't know the song wasn't even going to be listened to, with automatic votes going to its competitor; that is detestable. So don't try to portray this as whining because I didn't win, this is a protest of dishonesty.
I say don't be a baby about it. Just because you like the song doesn't mean everybody else has to.

I agree, but I would like neutral examination of my offering, and everyone else, instead of other songs "winning by default."

You know, this is exactly why I didn't participate in the first championship. I figured something like this was going to happen. But I suppose I can't really count on humans to be impartial.

Sika Dude, you've taken this way too far. The Music Taste Championships is supposed to be a bit of fun so everyone can listen to new music, but the incentive to win isn't as heavy as you're making it. I can only speak for myself, but my jokes about Titanic were light hearted, because I found the song choice to be a bit funny. But I already gleaned from previous posts by Ghostchild and other participants, that jokes aside, we still all listen to the music and vote accordingly. There is no conspiracy :billy

The 'suspenseful' end, while generic, is actually the only part of the song I kind of like. I don't really like the Celtic sound, that's just me. I know there are plenty of people who like that stuff, so to each their own. I found the Elvis Costello song kind of boring, but it was so-so. Slight edge to the Costello song.

You're probably right. All I say is, if people want to shift the blame of any controversy on some supposed childish need of my own rather than their own blatant dishonesty, I would like to correct them. But wise as ever Frank, you are right. I'm going to throw this debate out the window by positing the whole of life is meaningless, let alone some little internet competition. It's all about perspective :billy Never again shall I return to this thread. It was only in the name of fairness.

To be honest, I think you were harsh to rough up Ghostchild to begin with, and then he just returned that favor.
(Meaning, you both assumed the negative)

It's not that the Internet thread is meaningless, especially if you like music and are interested in what other people are recommending. But more than that, it should be a place for people to spread encouragement and delight over other people's song choices that they like. There's a feel-good vibe here that we don't want to get down by nitpicking or disagreeing with bad blood.

If you feel like someone is behaving without 'maturity', you can still look after that person, and be a positive influence in their life. Friendship can be very rewarding :billy

Get a life, dick. You don't know what's going on in my head. I'm not even going to bother to read all that BS. I've got more important shit to worry about than you.

Sik... I can't understand why you insist on us being dishonest when we say that we listened to the Titanic thing and gave it a fair try. I can't speak for everyone, but I did. I just didn't like it. It's one thing to be open to all music, it's another to like everything you ever hear.

Re: The Music Taste Championships #2 - Elimination Match Nine 1 year 4 months ago #107185

Sika, just so you know, the Buckley song was my favorite song of this whole thing.

I also appreciate the guts it took to submit the Titanic song, so kudos to your for that.

I admit, that so far in this thing I have not really taken many "risks". I mean, I submitted a few relatively unknown bands, but the genre stayed consistent in my submissions. Looking at your submissions, I would say you did the opposite. So, again, I respect that. So much so that I changed my approach with my last submission just based on your Titanic choice. I went with a song that I like and fuck what anyone else thinks about it.

So, yeah, while I may not have voted for every one of them, I appreciate your submissions and thank you for them.

I agree with you Frank, but I must say, some people have been downright rude over some choices. Outright shitting on them, in fact. That, of course, is there prerogative and they have the right to do that. To say that this competition is about "encouragement and delight" is not all that true from what I can tell.

Please, do not take this as sour grapes, cos to be honest so far my submissions have not really been shat on like many others. To me there are some lines you should not cross, and one of them is destroying other's taste in music. My music is the most important thing in the world to me, therefore, I assume it is the same for everyone else.

That is not to say that I have not criticized other's submissions. If I do not like a song, I will say so. In fact, as stupid as it sounds, I have been feeling guilty for weeks over comparing someone's submission to Christian Rock. I did not mean it to be so insulting as it came off, I was just trying to give an idea where I was coming from.

But, yeah, enough from me. I just have been surprised by some of the venom that has been unleashed in this one as opposed to the last MTC....
