For those of you who don't know, I'm an aspiring novelist working on his first novel. I'm 1/4 of the way. Influenced greatly by Stephen King and Chuck Palahnuik.

Top Five King Books

1. The Stand
2. Misery
3. The Long Walk
4. Christine
5. Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption

Haven't read: It, Cujo...

Aw, way to rub it in guys! I just lost my kindle at the airport last week :sigh

Well I was reading:

"How to Measure Anything" by Douglas Hubbard - aims to dispel the myth that intangibles can't be quantified when it comes to business or policy decision-making

I've also been on a New Yorker fiction binge :yay

I didn't know you were writing a novel, Frank. That's fantastic!

Have you read Chuck's "Damned" yet?

Having read most of Frank's novel, I can say that it is, in fact, pretty spectacular. I fully expect to be picking up a copy from the shelves and purchasing it in my local bookstore in the future :)

Palahniuk is my favorite author. I have read everything he has written by now I think. Haunted was a good quick read. Not his best work (I do not think it is possible to come close to Invisible Monsters or Fight Club) but very solid. I would give it an 8/10.

Im reading all the time and almost every book that happens to get in my way.

Currently:
Return to Redemption by Patrick Graham.
It's overly filled with sexual refernces I wouldn't have needed but the story at its core is one of the best I've red in months.

Anyone on here read the James Clavell books? They're great, if also a bit over the top with badly written sexual references.

May I ask, Frank, what the novel is about? Or is it "on the QT" until you finish it?

I've just started Fight Club, it's good, funny too. Also my brother refuses to believe Chuck is Gay!

A little part of me died the day I found out about Chuck. And then afterward I felt much better, because when I'm published and people are comparing me, they can say: 'Well, at least Frank isn't gay.' :D

I haven't read Damned. Probably the only one I haven't (And I'm assuming that's a new one). I will have to check that out.

My favorite thing from Chuck would be 'Guts', which is the first short story in Haunted. Other stories in Haunted are also good, but there's a lot of padding and crap stories in between. Fight Club is of course the best of the novels. I didn't like Invisible Monsters. I couldn't keep track of what was going on. Choke was great. Rant was good. Actually Survivor is almost as good as Fight Club if not better. That was the first one I read.

What's my story about.... I haven't written a blurb yet, but here goes......

Title: The Park

******************************************************

The streets of Melbourne are empty. Doors are locked. Lights are out. The city is silent.
A monster looms in the darkness.

What stood before them, was the greatest adversary they had ever known. Beneath the sewers Doth Gnasher commands an army of satanic serial killers who live and die on his every word. A foreign agency known as the White Police are called to the forefront to hunt down Gnasher and destroy his empire.

But this is just the beginning. The Park's seed has spread across rivaling Australian states. Before long the threat is international.

But then.

It always was.

Sounds interesting, Frank. Thanks for sharing.

The only Chuck books I've read are Fight Club, Choke, & Invisible Monsters. I actually think Choke is Fight Club's equal. Chuck P. is good, but sometimes he's not the greatest writer. But he's had a lot of popular success, I guess.

My fav writers are Cormac McCarthy, J.G. Ballard, Don Delillo, Philip K. Dick, & Hunter S.Thompson.

You're obliged to pretend respect for people and institutions you think absurd. You live attached in a cowardly fashion to moral and social conventions you despise, condemn, and know lack all foundation. It is that permanent contradiction between your ideas and desires and all the dead formalities...

Try out "Kiss Me Judas" by Will Christopher Baer. It's an awesome read! A very dark little neo-noir crime story.

JonnyDaycase, try The Third Man it's really cool, it's about a washed up American writer (Holly Martin) who goes Post War Vienna Austria to find a job with his best friend but finds out his childhood friend (Harry Lime) is running a racket and he finally pissed off the American, British, and Russians by selling rotten Penicillin to a Austrian Children's Hospital. Of course there are moral questions, a girl, and the German, Russian, British, and American Military Police. It's a kick ass, it has the Legendary and Epic Swiss Cuckoo Clock Speech, in five hundred years of war the rest of Europe has invented medicine, technology, and in five hundred years of peace Switzerland has invented Cuckoo Clock. Death and destruction breeds creation, Holly".
