Graduated from DePaul University in Chicago in Japanese Language and East Asian studies with a minor in poli sci.

Moved to NYC looking for "something in my field". found no one wants recent grads unless its to be a secretary. Worked at a Japanese publishing company as a temp for a few months, but HATED sitting at a desk in fluorescent lighting in a quiet Japanese office so i left one day and never went back. Applied to about 30 jobs and went to many many interviews.

Started working at a couple Japanese restaurants, where I could use japanese every day (65% of our clientele was Japanese business people and UN people). I was introduced to sake, shochu, and wine on a higher level, and fell in love with it.

Broke up with my Japanese boyfriend/fiance who I moved to NYC with and met when I studied in Japan , moved back to Chicago. Started working at a high paying, high end Fine Dining japanese restaurant, studied wine a lot. Recently got fired/let go.

But my dream is to open my own high end wine/sake/cocktail bar within the next 4 years.

Thinking about going back to get a 2nd bachelors or masters in wine and beverage management/entrepreneurship. still trying to figure out the best course for me. trying to start my certification as a master of wine this year.

if i could do it all over again, I would have gone to school for Law and Japanese-- I would have gone back to Japan and taught english, and then when I came back i would have been less lazy and interned at the UN and not moved back to chicago. liberal arts degrees are bullshit.

So... I'm guessing you're not a "recent" grad any more?

Re:What did you do when you left school? 4 years 3 months ago #60136

here's my non degree story
In school for Ad design, get in a car accident that screws me temporarily, met my husband and here I am working as a program coordinator for early education. Hate it BTW, so in my free time I go back to what I loved from school/college and that is....painting
and now my boss is wanting me to go back to school for something I don't want to do.
Plus I am not fond of having 18 month old children learn how to write. 2 year olds are in preschool rooms learning how to write. Learning things for kindergarten. They are so young, don't take their freedom away at such a young age
to be a product of the American assembly line. :(

My mom taught me at a young age, but it was my mom.
I just think it's horrid because they literally have no free play at. And when they do their free play is controlled still. Can't play with this or that etc..Shit they hardly have any time to socialize amongst each other. And the whole point in early education is social skills and learning through play-NOT just reading and writing oh and math. They are learning adding and subtracting.

Jesus, what the fuck is the point of having stuff there that your kids aren't allowed to play with?

Get your kids the fuck out of there.

I graduated last year and now i'm a carpenter and joiner. I feel pretty left out here with all the "psychology, law , politics, money, oil" etc being thrown around.

just a carpenter here.

:)

even lawyers, doctors and politicians need something to sit on and something to place their drinks on. Thus you are needed just as much as any of them.
Plus Jesus was a carpenter and he is the most important person ever to live..

Right on Slunk! :) No "justs".

I did a bit of college and then found out that it was not for me at the time so I decided to head out on my own and start a business.

But learning is an important part of who I am so I've taken many courses and classes since.

I've had a few business ventures since (my interest keeps on changing and I keep the businesses small so it's easy to change direction when I change). So far they have been a vintage clothing, antiques & kitch biz (Nothing newer than the 60's and everything unique). This was in my swing dance, 20's - 40's era glamour puss stage.

Then there was the Metaphysical shop, then the holistic healing, the personal coaching, the virtual assisting, marketing, photography, whimsical furniture painting. *laugh*

Some I do at the same time or have continued through the years and some have fallen to the side as collections too dear to my heart and rare to part with, except for to others that will appreciate them for what they are. (talking about the vintage, antiques & rarities here because it is not just an old piece of whatever...it is a part of history.)
*laugh* HEHE I get a little passionate about these things. *embarrassed look*

it is really cool to see the great mix of people that make up pumpkins.net

I forgot to say in my previous post that I just in the past few years have tried to work for others. I thought it would be much easier and less stressful. Boy was I wrong. I haven't had much luck with it so I'm going back to working for myself.

Anyone in need of a virtual assistant, or a marketer...or landscape photographs or custom painted anything *grin*? ;)

It would have been pretty cool being a carpenter for me, or anything along the lines of woodwork, metalwork, car work, etc. Unfortunately, I have no interest whatsoever in those fields. If I did, my life could be easily sorted out, just like the thugs who were allowed to leave school at the age of 15 because there's no classes you can take in woodwork beyond there. Getting an apprenticeship was the next step, and bam, you're sorted already.

What did I do when I left school?
I drank. A lot. :D

Well that was only after graduation and being a stupid 18 year old, I did it.

I'm working my way to law school, have a degree in international business and a minor in political science. I just have to figure out what kind of law I want to study. I was considering entertainment law and working for a record company, but I think selling part of my soul for law school was enough.

Although when I first started school I was a lit major, then a biology major, and then switched to business because I began working at a software company and that influenced me more.

I graduated from University with an Engineering degree about 10 years ago. Im now really bored with my job (Draughtsman) and wish I was doing something more practical like carpentry or pluming.

i dropped out of high school and after that i played video games and guitar and watched cult movies till the sun came up. worked with friends (definitely the funnest times i've ever had) and visited fellow drop outs during work/school days. drank a lot and did drugs. it was pretty fun and epic. live fast and grow up young.

Now im all ready to learn some stuff and go back to school then university, just for the hell of it.
