This is a thread I always wanted to have. :)

Which one shall it be?

Force yourself to ONE favourite (though it's unfair and inhuman, I know) and tell us about it and the others that didn't make it!

Tool - 10000 Days / Dream Theater - 6 Degrees of inner turbulence

Both albums not for the faint hearted

Tools 10000 days is really deep and atmospheric. The song Wings for marie and The Title tracks are incredibly moving.

6DOIT is a double disc album with 5 tracks on disc 1 and an epic 42 minute track on disc 2. Great stuff.

I would have to pick 10000 Days to be honest but its pretty tight

How about Non-SP favourite album? :)

Loveless - My Bloody Valentine

Wow, I love this album so much. My favourite tracks being Sometimes (which preluded Billy's Siamese Dream sound) and What You Want which is among my top 5 favourite songs of all time! This album didn't sell well, but it's arguably stood the test of time more than any other album from the 90's. I recommend anyone who hasn't listened to it to do so and in particular, listen to What You Want.

(Honourable mentions)
Carnavas - Silversun Pickups

Diary - Sunny Day Real Estate

I Empire - Angels and Airwaves.

Siamese Dream.

But there's also MCIS, Clouds Taste Metallic(flaming lips), Pinkerton(Weezer), and more.

Mellon Collie. But I think we should extend this to favorite albums because most will pick Smashing Pumpkins.

Yeah, for the sake of not making this repetitive and predictable, I'll stick to my favorite non-SP album--

EVOL - Sonic Youth :D

It's a toughie between that one and Faith by The Cure, but I'm no longer depressed so I only listen to sunshine and happy melodies now...

My favorite non-SP albums are:

Weezer - Pinkerton
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Vampire Weekend - Contra
NIN - The Downward Spiral
Radiohead - OK Computer

I actually have a lot, which I might like even more than those, but those are just a few. I don't want to give a huge list, that I'm sure no one is interested in.

SP related:

MACHINA full!!!(*cheat* it's one work :yay ).

non-SP:

#1: Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves.
This is the perfect balance between Post Rock, Experimental and Noise. It's very monolithic and melancholic for SY + the pieces are overlong, almost like symphonies. This album seems like the perfect snapshot of your esthetic autumn day to me.
Just pure beauty.

close to this:

Sonic Youth - Washing Machine / Confusion is Sex
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun / Fear of a blank planet / Signify / Up the Downstair
Joy Division - Closer
No-Man: ((Speak)) / Schoolyard Ghosts / Returning Jesus / Wild Opera

Siamese dream, but that shouldnt count in here.

i would say loveless or Daisy (Brand New)

they both are extremely fresh, original, and have those crazy sounds that i dig. daisy's lyrics are brilliant too.

Mellon Collie is my favourite.

Others that came close:

Minsk - The Ritual Fires of Abandonment

Minsk - With Echoes in The Movement of Stone

Isis - Panopticon

Amen - We Have Come For Your Parents

The Cure - Disintegration

Static-X - Wisconsin Deathrip

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

SP - Siamese Dream

There are probably others that are close, but they're definitely some of my favourites.

This is really hard. I go through cycles, where I listen to and album nonstop, and then maybe go to something else for a while, then go back. I do have albums that will always be near to my heart because of the times they have served in my life.

SP

- Adore or MCIS

NON SP (no specific order)

- Mezzanine Owls - Dark too Early
- Mojave 3 - Excuses for Travelers
- Opeth - Damnation
- Rush - Power Windows
- Dark Tranquility - Fiction
- Sigur Ros - ( )
- The Album Leaf - In A Safe Place
- Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
- Katatonia - Night Is The New Day

Too many... :sigh

Several Porcupine Tree albums were almost on that list, but maybe just slightly behind those albums I mentioned, hard to say though really. PT are one of my favourite bands for being consistently great though, if they haven't quite managed one of my all-time favourite albums yet :) In fact, I don't think there's ever been a year where they're released my favourite album of that year!

I have a song by Mojave 3! Love Songs on the Radio, it's a really nice song and nice to fall asleep to. That's all I know from them though. I got that song from a free weekly iTunes download, one of the rare cases, where it's actually good :p

Alright, thanks for the insight in your album rating system :yay .
So, unfortunatley there was an album called Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness besides The Sky moves sideways in 1995, right ? ;)

Just a few off the top of my head in no particular order:
-Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
-Disintegration, The Cure
-Without You I'm Nothing, Placebo
-Automatic for the People, R.E.M.

Exactly! :) That's probably the closest they've come to getting "Album of the Year" in the infamous Epitome Album Rating Systems (EARS for short).

In 2000, Amen's We Have Come For Your Parents just beat Bloodflowers by The Cure and PT's Lightbulb Sun.

Steven Wilson's solo album in 2008 was probably my favourite album of that year, just ahead of Alkaline Trio's Agony & Irony. But, 2008 was quite a weak year really, so although Insurgentes is a great album, it probably wouldn't have been my album of the year any other year but that!

Can anyone say "music nerd"? ;)

Nerd! :D
I don't rate albums in a very different way, but some years were really lame but others had too many brilliant releases.
But I've had had similar problems for my album of the years and 2000 and 2007 (and still have them):

2000:
Lightbulb Sun OR (the whole) MACHINA OR nyc Ghosts & Flowers by Sonic Youth

2007:
Fear of a blank planet OR White Chalk by PJ Harvey

...and so on, this list could go on forever...2009 was the ultimate letdown to me so it was very easy to pick the #1:
The Sonic Youth album (The Eternal) was medicore though I loved it live, I didn't like the Incident and the only album that was just like god to me was Devin Townsend's Ki with some of the most winter-ish and melancholic post rock I've ever heard (he did sort of aggressive but cool prog metal before)....

OK, I'm sorry, that's slightly getting off-topic now.
