Marc Bolan. He was going to be huge.

George Harrison, and of course John Lennon were also pretty tragic, moreso because it ruled out a future Beatles reunion. Fuck that would be insane.

I'm not a fan of their music, but I always thought Bradley Nowell's death was rather tragic considering his band's success didn't come until after his death (Sublime) and he had just gotten married.

Also Steve Clark from Def Leppard. I remember coming home from school and finding out he had died from my dad. It kind of opened my eyes to death in the since that a rockstar I idolize actually died (I was only 9 at the time). Strangely enough, I never thought that was possible...Rock star's seemed immortal to me. :dead

It seems Billy quit trying to "push that musical envelope" after the Machina Era. There were a few interviews where he talked about how Machina "alienated" his fan base and I think he's been careful to try not to do that ever since. But that's just my opinion. R.I.P. Old school Billy. I still love you man.

Man, I don't think he could have alienated his fan base any more after Zeitgeist... ;)

Stevie Ray Vaughan. Drug addiction and life on the road as a superstar had driven him to the point of no return. He nearly killed himself countless times but managed to get through it all, admit he had a problem, kick his addiction, and get himself healthy. He performed a "comeback" show and then died in a plane crash the same night leaving that concert.

Most of the others I immediately thought of have already been mentioned.

I think, in terms of what musical output could have been, I'd probably say Hendrix. Or maybe Nick Drake?

Good call Ugly Joe. Nick Drake's music is one of favourites to chill out to.

I'd have to say Jeff Buckley or John Lennon because they're of the few who did not put themselves in a position to be tragically dead. I mean so many musicians who die young or in tragic ways are dead partially because of a dangerous lifestyle choice.

I mean Billy knew when to get away from Courtney-- why couldn't Kurt?(that's a joke)
