Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family
To Manson's credit, this album does stand out as being a unique piece of music. It hits the ground running with the terrifying Intro and superb rocker Cake and Sodomy. Track 3 Lunchbox maintains the strong start. Then we get to Organ Grinder and things start to get uncomfortable. It's still scary, but the music isn't that good so it's kind of an off feeling. Like you are no longer empowered by the terror, it's like the terror is actually after you. I would rather listen to a song that made everyone else start dying around me, than a song that is attacking the listener.
After halfway through the album we are granted stand outs Wrapped in Plastic and Dogma. These songs are probably not any better than Cake and Sodomy, but at least it is a return to a better standard. Then we get some more average songs, including the terrible mess called My Monkey. The album closes with on a pretty good note with Misery Machine, but it's nowhere near enough to forget all of the averageness of the album.
Honestly, I can't see myself listening to this CD much. I'll come back to the Intro and Cake and Sodomy from time to time, but it will be a very rare day indeed I choose to listen to the entire album.
And yet to save Portrait from falling below the pass mark, I am yet again reminded of it's bleak uniqueness.
