List three of your favorite albums that are not Billy Corgan or SP-related. :down
And talk about them! :yay

Here are mine:
  • Faith - The Cure
  • EVOL - Sonic Youth
  • Closer - Joy Division

EVOL is kind of hard to explain. So if you haven't heard it, I'll just advise you to go listen to it. If you look at the album cover, you'll begin to get an idea.
Faith is my favorite The Cure album. In contrast to Disintegration, it's more of a muted, quiet inner sadness. The album cover for this one also describes it perfectly. Listen to it on a grey, gloomy day. I gave half of all the songs on this album 5 stars.
And although I consider Faith to be the saddest album by The Cure, Joy Division's Closer is a serious candidate, in my opinion, for the most depressing album ever. I almost feel like I'm trivializing it by characterizing it in those terms. The album, especially in the last four songs, is extremely powerful. Paralyzing. It reaches heights of serious despair that I feel uneasy just thinking about. I won't say anymore.

My three are:

Aenema - Tool
Superunknown - Soundgarden
Themata - Karnivool

Aenema is such a powerful album, both politicaly and musicaly, the album opener 'stinkfist' is my favourite non pumpkins song, i see this as maynards best work, both from tool and a perfect circle.

Superunknown is the best album from the grunge era in my opinion. Each song brings its own light to the album, creating a wonderful atmosphere in the album as a whole. 'Kickstand" being my favourite of the songs".

Themata is such a briliant groundbreaking album by my favourite australian band, im not sure if it has been expoted overseas, if it has i seriously recomend it to anyone who appreciates good, original material. My favourite song on the album being "Cote".
I got Bolly spit on me :D

Weezer - The Blue Album
Luckyboys Confusion - Commitment
Here We Are - Swizzle Tree

I could have put Weezer's pinkerton in there as the third, but i didn't want to have two from the same band. And Swizzle tree is what has been residing in my car cd player for the past few months.

Only three? :sigh

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Rocks. I love the whole glam rock scene. Not nearly as "wall of sound" as SP, but one of those albums you can listen all the way through and love every single song. And who doesn't love albums about rock gods from outer space? Favorite songs: Moonage Daydream, Starman, Hang On to Yourself, Ziggy Stardust, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide. (This album just barely beat out Bowie's Aladdin Sane, which is a "wall of sound" album, and much darker than Ziggy.)

Lou Reed - Transformer
Another glam rock album. Hookers, drug dealers, and drag queens. Is a very jazzy album, and it was produced by David Bowie, and has some awesome backing vocals by him. Plus, Lou Reed has a cool voice. Favorite songs: Perfect Day, Hangin' Round, Walk on the Wild Side, Satellite of Love.

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Yet more glam! Just a good-ass album. Favorite songs: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Candle in the Wind, Grey Seal, Jamaica Jerk-Off, Ballad of Danny Bailey, Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting), Roy Rogers.

Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes
Alice In Chains: Dirt
Nine Inch Nails: Broken

I just love Tori's voice on this album, and "Silent All These Years" is such a meaningful song to me.
And Dirt to me, just represents that entire grunge era and Angry Chair is one of my all time fave. songs.
Broken may not be a full album, but each song is just so powerful.
No one knows, where our secrets go.

KEEP YOUR EMO OUT OF MY METAL!!!!!!!

Well, The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance is excellent, but probably not *quite* as good as their previous album. Either of those could be in my list.

Dropkick Murphys - Sing Loud, Sing Proud is also a fantastic album.

Any Green Day album, they're all great and I find it hard to pick a favourite.

I own so many albums I really like, I find it hard to pick from them without listing half of my collection! Plus, I can't even think of all the albums I have off the top of my head.

My favourite album of all-time, without doubt, is Mellon Collie... but of course that doesn't qualify for this list.

1. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

If you've heard this album, then you'll understand exactly why it's loved so much by so many people. If you haven't heard it, make it your musical priority. Sometimes, When You Sleep, Only Shallow

2. Radiohead - OK Computer

Downright depressing, yet strangely uplifiting at the same time. A must listen for Pumpkins fans.Paranoid Android, Exit Music (For A Film), Karma Police

3. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

A fuzzy folk epic, with songs about love, sex and Anne Frank. Two Headed Boy Part 1, Two Headed Boy Part 2, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

There are loads of other albums that I could have picked, but I managed to narrow it down to those three.

1. The Cure: Disintegration (It was hard to chose between this and Faith, but to me Disintegration is up there with Adore for being the most atmospheric album ever.)

2. The Pixies: Doolittle

3.Zwan: Mary Star of The Sea??? - I am allowed to chose this one. It's not a Smashing pumpkin album and it is brilliant.

Joy Division - Closer
Joy Division - Unkown Pleasures
KRS One - KRS One

The first two are Pretty self explanatory. Joy Division is my favorite band besides the pumpkins. Noone does depression like Ian Curtis - NOBODY! If I had to write a soundtrack for my life half would be Pumpkins and half would be Joy Division. I'm listening to KRS One's self titled album right now and it's really refreshing. With all the "crap rap" out today i had to dig into the archives for some hip hop to listen to. This album was over my head when I was young but he raises some great points on this disc about everything from politics to religion. Far from the babble that passes for rap these days.

Ok 3 is just too hard...

At the drive in - In/Casino/Out. This band and this album is just brilliant, fun, creative, and never gets old. Most people would list Relationship of Command and while that one has much better production and is heavier it doesn't have the variety that In/Casino/Out does. The album was recorded live in the studio and is better for it. Great lyrics if you like lots of metaphors but a lot of fun can be had trying to figure them out. To this day I don't think there will ever be a better punk band then At the Drive in. I miss them so.

Bjork - Homogenic. She has the voice of the gods but the gods speak much different then you would expect. The combination of Dark electronica and classical music is astounding and breathtaking at times. Bjork is a true artist and this is her masterpiece. Good variety, songwriting, and of course Bjork's expansive voice.

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 revisited. There is nothing I can say about this album that hasn't already been said and resaid by Harvard scholars and broke ass coffeeshop poets. It's flawless.

Rage Against The Machine - Battle For Los Angelos. Guerilla Radio may be one of their worst songs. But Rage never wrote a bad song. The rest of the album is just crushing. Slowing down a bit from the Bad Brains inspired mayhem of Evil Empire; the band puts out the best music of their career. The solos are crazy, the riffs are heavy, and they created one of my favorite songs of all time: Ashes in the fall. If you haven't heard this song GET IT. Zach mellowed out a tad to bring you his most effective rapping and saving the screams for maximum impact. His lyrics are thoughtprovoking, anger inducing, and always propells the music. This is the album that made me realize the importance of lyrics. So in a way it's responsible for my love of the Pumpkins.

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place. Instrumental music that says a lot more than most music with lyrics. The drum performances on this album rival the pumpkins.

I'm going to stop here I think but I could go on.
