Contest - Rules & Prizes So courageous... ...to say that prizes suck or that songs are awful while posting as a guest, rather than under your account name (if you have one). Bravo! And what kind of prizes were you expecting for a contest related to charity cd with covers on it?
News - ThePumpkins.net is 1 Year Old 1 year Congratulations Murder. You have managed to do more in one year than Steven and I have been able to do with Landslide in 9 years (popularity and fan participation wise). It's quite an accomplishment smilies/smiley.gif take care, David
Contest - 2ND PLACE: Crush by João Miguel (Video by Alex Boyd) N/A Mr. Boyd informed that he has a faster version in the works, with an added scene and more frames, but it won't be eligible for this contest obviously, since were at the voting stage. He is busy with a dissertation for school at the moment apparently. David
News - Smashing Pumpkins Headline Virgin Festival N/A Yes, the operative phrase is 'that has been announced'. People are freaking out or depressed across the net, thinking that this means that this is the first North American date. When we all remember when people thought Rock Am Ring was the first SP show back, and then weeks later we learn about Pinkpop, which will occur before that. Some may think I'm a North American fan in denile or something. But I in fact live in Toronto, so it's not in my vested interest be contrary to popular belief on the subject smilies/wink.gif David
News - Zeitgeist Tracklist Revealed N/A Damn, you beat me to it smilies/wink.gif. Are we sure that's the exact track order though? Who knows the guy could have made a mistake or the promo could be different than the order on the album. Anyways, I put a disclaimer on Landslide just in case the track order (not the track list) changes smilies/wink.gif David
News - Zeitgeist Tracklist Revealed N/A One thing that should pointed out that there were 18 tracks listed on that whiteboard (if I counted correctly). Some people assumed it would be all 18, but there was not much chance of that smilies/wink.gif. Although I have to say I would have rather seen around 15 like Machina. Some of the track names do sound as other people have said a little too political, but there is hope musically. The reason I say that is not everything is going to sound the same. Some synth-pop in there even. David
News - Smashing Pumpkins On The Transformers Soundtrack Transformers isn't the problem, Michael Bay et al are It's not that people necessarily dislike the idea of Transformers, just that I think we all know how this will likely turn out. Michael Bay is the same guy who directed Armageddon, and Pearl Harbor, not exactly masterpieces. Yes, Transformers is not meant to be intellectual, but I would like to be a good popcorn movie, not a bad one. I actually love Transformers growing up as a kid, I am just skeptical about this movie. So, SP- great, Transformers-great, Michael Bay (and what he will likely do to Transformers) not great smilies/wink.gif David
News - Zeitgeist Cover Song Contest charity The only time Act IV has been given anything of substantial worth (eg. Light into Dark vinyl), they were earmarked specifically for the purposes of charity auctions, and that is very rare case indeed. It sounds like you would rather have us give a way an item worth hundreds of dollars in a random draw rather than doing the right thing (which we have), and use it to help raise funds to help grant wishes terminally ill children.
News - Zeitgeist Cover Song Contest N/A Apology accepted. In a sense this is just for fun, but at the same time it will hopefully create awareness of our tribute, and by extension help us raise funds for Make-A-Wish. My brother and I had put together the tribute with the help of fans from around the world. It was basically out of pocket. In terms of the copy of Ghost Children 2 that is one of the prizes, we will donate the amount that would have gone to charity if someone had bought it to Make-A-Wish. We are making a net loss basically, since we don't make up the cost of expenses on this copy of the CD.
Contest Entry - The Rose March (dreamelectric) American Gothic Yeah I figured it was inevitable that someone was going submit something off of American Gothic, since it was packaged with Zeitgeist on iTunes instead of its own. So we pre-emptively opened the flood gates on that. I think someone was considering covering "Gossamer" but that was only performed live, so we had to say no.
News - Order The American Gothic CD Oops That was me, forgot to log in David
News - Order The American Gothic CD For which countries? Sunky over at Ozphoria informed me that Warner Music said they wanted to delay the release in Australia to have it come out closer to the Pumpkins tour there. So that explains that. But it still make no sense fans back in Canada will be getting the physical release of American Gothic three weeks after the US even though we got the iTunes release at the same exact time. There is no Canadian tour dates in the foreseeable future, so that can't be it.
Contest Entry - Doomsday Clock (ETF) Originality I get what you are saying yourherozero, but from my personal point of view, while a straightforward cover may be a little boring, putting your own original spin on a song is good, whether it's subtle or more 'experimental' such as this one. The important thing is that the songs sound like they are in the spirit of/inspired by SP. As opposed to the Midnight in the Patch tribute, which while it had original versions of the songs, the artists sounded like they never listened to SP in their lives. Which is probably true smilies/wink.gif David
Contest Entry - Bring The Light (Jean-Christophe) Jean-Christophe If you a reading this, I have sent you a friend request through the Act IV myspace for the myspace you provided when you submitted your cover. We will feature your cover eventually, but it maybe a couple of weeks. We are basically featuring the covers in order of submission, except when there are repeats (such as Doomsday Clock), which will be featured later. David
Contest Entry - Doomsday Clock (Antimime) Originals Hey Antimime. It's good that you are letting people know you have originals. I suggest this for anyone else who has submitted as well. We will feature your cover of "Doomsday Clock" eventually on the Act IV myspace (and if you like, we can put up one of your originals as well at that time as well), but it may be awhile. We are featuring the submissions more or less in order, except for when there are repeats of the same song. Since we already featured the first entry of this song a couple of weeks ago, it will be awhile since there are three versions of this song (including yours). David
Contest Entry - Tarantula (acoustic) (Alan Falsetti) Act IV Factoid It's interesting to note that Alan was one of the people who submitted demos for Ghost Children 2. Unfortunately he didn't make the final cut because it was 70 artists competing for 13 spots, so it was some tough competition. I tried to track down as many artists who did not make the final cut to see if they were interested in submitting something, but I was probably able to contact maybe a dozen at most. There maybe more people from Act IV past submitting something, but the people that have responded have basically given me maybes. David
Contest Entry - Doomsday Clock (ETF) Thanks Listening to as many covers I have heard over the years through Act IV projects, I should hope I am onto something smilies/wink.gif Of course, as one of the organizers of the project, I am not going to be stating my personal opinion on any of these submissions either way. I am also not sure if I should even vote for the best cover song.
Contest Winner - United States (Phil Mckenna) In the future You could try contributing drums to someone else's cover of a Pumpkins song. Like someone approaches you with a rough cut of their demo without drums, and you would see if you could tell them whether or not you think you contribute to the song. A sort of freelance studio track drummer smilies/wink.gif. But maybe that's a crazy idea. I remember for the first Act IV show, a guy actually tried to audition by sending as an audio tape him drumming to Pumpkins song, which was kind of weird considering that there was no backing track. It was in the pre-Youtube days of course. In that case, the guy should have approached individual bands instead to offer his services, or send a general message out to people offering his services. David
Contest Entry - Tarantula (acoustic) (Alan Falsetti) The solo Billy once played Tarantula (acoustic) at the Berlin secret show back in June. Even for Billy he took some doing to pull off the solo on acoustic guitar. FYI, I think it is in fact recorded in a basement or something like that. There is video for this rendition on Youtube. He seems to also have many other SP covers on there. I noticed he is not on my myspace list for Act IV (doesn't appear to be on Myspace period), so I guess I must have not been able to contact him directly after all. He just found about this on his own I guess. David
Contest Entry - Zeitgeist (Event Of The Year) Covers I can appreciate the sentiment about not wanting to make exact copies of covers. It's good to put your own spin on songs, but I found that not all good covers have to necessarily be far removed from the original as the covers you mention are for the most part. Sometimes even a tweak here and there can make your own mark on a song. As I mentioned in response to one of the other threads, songs on some of the more commercial tributes have been drastically different from the original but they didn't really capture the spirit of the songs at all, almost like they have never heard SP before. So there is good and not so good covers along the whole spectrum from straight forward to drastically different. David
